About to create my first non-melee character... any ideas?

So, all the time that I have been playing GW I have played a warrior and a dervish.

I now want to try something different, so I am thinking of creating a non-melee character and would like some input for those that are familiar with them.

I am considering both the necromancer and the elementalist, but I wonder which one is better for solo-ish PvE play, which one has the highest survivability, etc.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Necromancers or Ritualists for their versatility. They're both instant party grabs with a fair amount of both support and damage builds that work in high end PvE and PvP. Plus they're not half bad at soloing areas.

Both are equal with survivability in dif. ways. Both have the ability to kill and survive effectively.

The main dif. is Necro is usually more reactive damage or MM.
Elementalist is usually for early spike damage or using tank style skills.

I have more fun with necro, but that's just an opinion.

Either one probably has the same survivability depending on how you play. Considering you've only played melee characters though, it might be easier to adjust to playing as an Elementalist since you would be going for straight out damage and a little bit of self support. As opposed to a Necromancer, which requires you to stay in the back lines and attack by proxy.

Ritualist is a nice cross between Necromancer and Elementalist though. (When used properly)

Personally I found Fire Elementalist the most fun to play. They get to blow stuff up, and seeing those big numbers is really satisfying. They're also not as fragile as some other caster professions, and have lots of interesting utility spells.

Necro would be my second choice. The reason I place them second is that while they can do tremendous damage, it's usually indirect, and doesn't feel as satisfying as, say, pumping Searing Flames at the enemy.

Necromancer, hands down; then make a Ritualist, because I love them*. Then again I'm biased, with my Necro and Rit being my two most played characters.

It's all about what you'd like. Ele's can do a lot of damage over an area or to a single target, but then again Necro's can do that and so much more. Besides, everyone loves a nice, form fitting armour set on their female characters (1k Cabal top, 15k Elite Cultist's glove, 1k Ascalon leggings and boots - my favourite armour set), right?

*Edit: Didn't come out right, that bit. Ritualists are fun, for many reasons. Mine is primarily Restoration Magic, but I'm thinking of trying the cheap Rt/R build with Barrage and Splinter Weapon that's floating around. Ritualists are very versatile, and have lovley armour (Elite Kurizck and Norn are fantastic).

I'm doing the same as you, playing Melee for most of my GW life also. Personally i think i will go Ele, as i love to deal huge damage, and the armors are fairly nice too, that and basically ALL parties love Eles

Check out the various solo builds in Campfire or PvXWiki and get an idea of what both professions are capable of doing solo.

either of those 3 mentioned above works... Whatever you pick, you'll have to watch out, no more high AL, your down to 60 now with caster classes.

As for the survivability, I'd say Necromancer, because Elementalists tend to lack self-heals and the like...
