Already mentioned are some of the reasons that attracted me to GW, and finally convinced me to buy the game (once-off-fee, art style, no pk'ing, no kill steals, not gear-centric, low level cap), but I've added another one recently that didn't really hit me until I realised that GW2 is going to be quite different.
Humans as the only playable race.
I'm not saying that having races in games is bad. But it is horribly generic. Occassionally you get a few original races, but the race you play often (but not always) determines vital stats - leading to certain races being predominantly one or two classes.
Not to steal from Cirque du soile/Optus advertising, but I find it incredibly appropriate:
"Humans are amazing creatures."
Look at GW. Players who own all 3 campaigns can make their characters look like any number of peoples from accross the globe, and while I know that some players find that undesirable, I absolutely love it. This is my greatest disappointment about the canning of Utopia and it's South American theme. Adding more ethnicities to the game would have had me in heaven.
I know there are many who do not agree with me. They like their generic, human, elf, gnome options. But I've played games that do all that. GW has been the first game where I've been able to create things like:
- High born English lady
- Arabic princess
- Desert nomad
- Little Asian orphan
- Hindi princess
- Large white barbarian
No other game offers the human race such options. (No don't get me started on Oblivion because the character creation screen there was just... Too hard to work with.) In (most) other games humans are boring. Or rather Boring - note the capital. And it never seems to matter what advantages you give them over other races, 99% of the population doesn't touch them for precisely that reason.
I hope GW2 will offer true ethnicity options for human characters - not simply a skin tone variation, but face and hair styles that summon up images of anicient civilisations. This is the only thing that will sell me on a game that (from rumour) is shaping up to be a clone of every other generic MMORPG out there.
