Devourer Wars
donjn
I finally caved in and bought Guild Wars about a half year ago along with the expansions. I was immediately attracted to the gameplay, and loved the Halloween and Christmas events. I played for a couple months and enjoyed myself, but something was not right. Something seemed "missing". It may be because in those few months I did not group with anyone once, except to be a gate monkey. In other MMO's I surely have formed groups many times by then. Not sure why this happened. I am in a large enough guild. Maybe the henchmen AI is so good that I don't need to group with people? Either way, GW felt too much like a single player game to me.
The last couple months I have not logged on and I think I finally know why:
The lack of monster types.
In effect, I see the original campaign as Devourer Wars. There are so many devourers in this game. Everywhere you go, they come up out of the ground, over and over again, with a rock elemental thrown in occasionally. And it does not stop.
They are everywhere.

Don't worry, there's going to be lots more than Devourers once you get past Ascalon. Especially if you're in Pre-Searing.... >_>

Try to get further in the game ?

He killed off a survivor attempt in one shot - he is the ultimate devourer - perhaps the Char should hail him as their God

just whatever you do, don't start noticing how much people say "umm", outside of this game. >< the rage

Got your lack of monster types right here.
And thats only prophecies.
Devourers only appear in Old Ascalon, some areas in the Magumma Jungle and the Crystal Desert.

Admittedly though, once you gt to the Shiverpeaks you dont get any devourers till you get past kryta and into the maguuma jungle.

Old Ascalon gets very grating very fast. You might feel like you've done quite a bit of the game but you've just scratched the surface. My suggestion, do the primary quests/missions in Ascalon ASAP and get the heck outa that tar pit. The game gets much more interesting once you start going through different areas.

To the OP: You're underestimating how huge the map is: you're still in the first few areas of the game.
You know how big the map in Oblivion is? GW's map is, I'd say, easily six times that, or more.
If you play Prophecies like you'd play a single-player cRPG, doing all quests and exploring, then it'll take you at least 100 hours to complete the game - and odds are you'll get stuck for a bit somewhere too, as difficulty ramps up. Basically, the game is huge. As is the variety of monsters as you progress.

I wonder if he has got to any missions. As you should be able to find people in there to find groups. Atleast most of them.
cosyfiep
and that is just chapter one....wait until he gets to the afflicted in factions!!!
there are LOTS of different types of creatures to kill in guildwars....just step outside of ascalon!

There's lotsa stuff to kill. Plenty of missions and quests to do. PvP. AB. Challenge missions. Help people in your guild, etc, etc.
Seems to me like you just didn't put the effort in and expected the game to come to you.
Stolen Souls
Ahh, yes. I remember the days of old, cursing the 183434843438 devourer popups. *take 3 steps...popup* *take 3 more...ooh, another*
Then came GW:EN, and with it...Molotav...the great big, party-wiping reminder of those days. ^_^
But er...enough of that. What everyone else said...just play some more, you'll start to run into different mobs.

Here I thought this was a thread about a new type of PvP involving groups of players on Siege Devourers.

What the OP means is that devourers along with minotaurs and centaurs lose their uniqueness when scattered through out the expanse of the game.
I believe as long as the "Monster race" has sub defined races, such as the Elonian centaurs vs the Shiverpeak centaurs, IZ AWL GEWD 'N DA H00D

You'd have to do it as one of the sillier games like snowball or the Dragon Arena, but who wouldn't want to see a group of eight Siege Devourers beating up on another group.
A Charr Arena, perhaps?
Witchblade
@OP: if you think there are way too much devourers in this game, you're gonna love the charrs ^^

And don't you just know, most of the bloody bday pressies I get are devourers. I give them away as soon as I open them *shudder*
genofreek
Hell no, I'll take Rocktail over any given damn set of uppity charr. XD
But then, I'm your opposite. I like scorpions and don't care much for felines.

There are a ton of devourers early in the game. Later there are a bunch dwarves, imps, forgotten, dryders, naga, griffons, minotaurs, undead, giants, tengu, hydras, trolls, mursaat and a bunch of other stuff that I can't recall right now.

I believe that the worst thing you can do in a game is 'grind'. By 'grind' I mean having to do a LOT of something you're not too keen on to reach a goal. When you find yourself doing this, be wary. Know yourself and your limits. I've had a few friends leave after pursuing a seemingly endless set of goals involving Vanquishing, Skill Titles, etc.. I remember thinking at the time, "Why are they doing that? It's clearly an effort for them. They're doing it simply for a title. What's the point?" Then I've seen them get fed up of the game and leave.. (I believe some of these friends are now inhabiting WoW!!! )
Anyway, what I'm trying to say, is do stuff YOU want to do. There is so much to do in GW, whether you're a solo-type or whether you prefer the company of others; whether you're a great player or you struggle with tasks others find easy (research it, approach it from different angles, get others to help, whatever..). Wiki is your friend - and forums such as this one ^..^
I kind of know what you mean about the monsters, as there are groups of the same monsters in various parts of GW which look the same but just have different names, but really, there are LOADS of monsters, as others have said.
I really don't know whether any of this applies to you, but you must have done more in four months than chomp on a few devourers I think you've spent too much time alone. The interaction of others certainly makes a game more interesting, even if it's only the occasional interaction with a kamikaze wammo who feels good shouting HEAL ME NOOB MONK at you!!

FWIW I felt much the same about devourers when I started playing as well, I was heartily sick of the damn things, but at least once you're past Yaks Bend they won't bother you so much.
By the time you've gone through Maguuma and the Crystal Desert you'll probably feel the same way about Scarabs as well.
It's a problem with almost every online game I've played that monster skins tend to get recycled and renamed a lot, but understandable really. As much as I like WoW and do play, that's even worse. The same Tiger model renamed over and over "Young Stranglethorn Tiger", "Stranglethorn Tiger" "Elder Stranglethorn Tiger" ad nauseum. You get the idea.

The thing with Prophecies is that there are not many heterogeneous groups of monsters in there.
Devourers are a bit heterogeneous, with Warriors, Rangers and Necromancers.
But
Abominatios? Always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Elementals? Almost always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Drakes? Always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Dryders? Always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Giants? Always a bunch of the same profession.
Griffons? Always a bunch of the same profession.
Hydras? Always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Imps? Always a bunch of elementalists of the same element.
Minotaur? Always a bunch of warriors of the same mastery.
Nightmares? Always a bunch of the same profession.
Ettins? Always a bunch of warriors of the same mastery.
Plants? Almost always a bunch of warriors the same profession. With sometimes a monk plant spawning nearby.
Scarabs? Always a bunch of necromancers.
Skales? Always a bunch of necromancers.
Arachnids? Always a bunch of rangers.
Trolls? Always a bunch of warriors.
That's the problem with Prophecies. Too much farm-friendly with too many bunches of enmies of the same profession without heterogeneousness.
There should be things like:
- Smitting monks and beast mastery ranger ettins.
- Warrior drakes.
- Giants of all 6 professions.
And so on.
