Skill art gone downhill? Certainly. Kind of hard to deny that. I have no problems with changes in artist from set to set. That's common. Same for some slight changes in style, but, there could have at least been a little better art direction so the same color palettes were used and at least similar qualities were sought.

I like the pop culture stuff, makes you feel like the game makers are still humans like the ppl that play it.gives you something to relate to besides your love for GW.
As for the skill icon art,i dont see NF and Gwen skills better or worse then prof and factions, its just diff art types.i give them a hand for makeing such details in a 64 x 64 box

QFT. I'm sorry but not everybody wants some stupid fancy names. The naming system now is fine, in fact it's useful as it kind of helps you figure out what the skills do.
Meanwhile, those names just sound silly. Also, childish? How do the skills sound childish? Of course throwing dirt sounds childish, children throw dirt! Mud throw sounds like some stupid pokemon attack - even more childish.
Same here! To me the pop culture references make the devs appear to have a sense of humor and be more human than people often think.

I'm perfectly fine with the names as they are now, pop culture references make me chuckle at times, but I'm mostly neutral on them. So, that's a big negative on Phoenix' suggestions. Terrible stuff. Absolutely abysmal.
All I find annoying is the change in colour scheme and style in class skill icons. They aren't similar enough to one another to "sync" on a skill bar. Monk skills since Nightfall and everything in EoN.

I normally hate Factions with a vengeance but I admit even its cheesy 3D icons are closer to Prophecies than GW:EN. However...

I think that if you wanted to be honest, the real problem is that Guild Wars seems to be a mix of serious and not-serious content, and sometimes the so-called humor doesn't go over very well.
As for skills and skill icon art, well, I don't think that there's a problem with "Throw Dirt". If you watch a lot of gladiator movies, it's pretty common to see fighters throw dirt in the face of an opponent to blind them. However, skills like "Tryptophan Signet" with a sack of beans as the icon... Wow, I think that anybody can pretty much say that it's not as funny as the programmers originally thought it was.

Well, if you pay close attention, most of the crap pop culture reference skills are PvE only skills. So you don't HAVE to see them be used against you or use them yourself at any time if you don't want too.
fenix
Of course it has gone down, because Anet don't care any more. a) they already have your money, so anything new they add can be as ridiculous as they like and b) they are working on GW2, so ANYTHING related to GW1 is on the back burner...permanently.
maraxusofk
id say skill art has gone up, considering how low a bar factions set.

Well what you to think about is how low on the scale of importance skill icons are. I mean sure its great to see a couple of interesting designs for the icons but beyond the first few times i've seen an icon I never look back. Most of my time is spent watching what the opponent's skill is and pushing the number on my keyboard that is an appropriate reaction. I sure don't equip a skill and then spend hours on end entranced in the design and intricacy of the artwork.
Now items which are up in importance in terms of design can be seen in just the latest design a weapon contest weapon releases. The detail of the artwork (IMO) has been totally captured for each weapon and placed into the game, each weapon looks amazing and certainly is something i'd much rather have great design in rather than some small squares at the bottom of my screen.
Overall, guild wars design hasn't gone downhill in the big picture of the game (ex. catacombs of kathandrax as an older eotn example, and design a weapon releases as something very recent) skill icons just are too low on the chart to really be considered too much. THis is how I would prefer it anyways, I'd much rather have great looking weapons and environments than great looking skill icons that I only look at once or twice.

Nothign is worser, as more then 1000 skills with douzends of different Skill Icon Styles endign up in a Style Chaos. That looks just stupid and unprofessional, when a Game as Skill icons from different Artists, when the styles look then so heavily different, that any noob can see the differences. ...Example Skills I would rename: Throw Dirt > Mud Throw Run as One* Rampageas One* Heal as One* Strike as One* * Those would be all "Gemini-Skills", so Gemini Rush/Rage/Strike/Heal Penetrating/Sundering Attack (such a stupid name for a Bow Shot -.-) > Drilling Arrow/Shot Heket's Rampage (such skill name are stupid, when they have names of creatures it it, such skill names are only good for monster only-skills) > Animalish Rage Melandru's Assault (really I personally would expect from a Skill name like this alot more, than only a silly animal attack oO) > Etherial Assault Zojun's Shot: OMG, nothing sounds more childish and stupid, like Skills being named after persons and boss creatures, please anet, never do this anymore for GW2 Comfort Animal/Revive Animal > Companion Heal/ Companion Revive. Skill names which start with verbs are stupid and sound so extreme dry ... *lots of following terrible translated Skill Names* Example: Broad Head Arrow > German: Stahlspitzenpfeil Correct would be: Breitkopf-Pfeil, because Stahlspitzenpfeil would be "Steel Point Arrow" Quickening Zephyr > Not much people know, what is meant with Zephyr, to much such things better understandable, the Skill name must explain it better ... > Winds of Zyphyr < such things are for nature spirits an exception Called Shot > Sonic Breaker Shot Magebane Shot > on english the name is short, but on german the name is so extreme long, never do this anymore in GW2, find translations, which are in the size similar, even when its not correct translated, not everything must be ever correct translated, when the names become uber large through it and sound through it totally silly. On German this skill is called "Verderben des Magiers-Schuss", what would be translated on English again > "Doom of Mages-Shot" Ranger alone had lots of good examples ,how to give Skills childish/stupid/senseless names and the other professions have also lots... ... |
Penetrating is a bad word to use for an arrow attack? What do you think arrows do? They penetrate/sunder armor! These links should help.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sunder
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/penetrate
Drilling shot? Arrows dont drill...
Animal names in skills is bad? Ever heard the phase, stirred up a hornets nest? Like a raging bull(also the title of a very famous movie)?
Melandru is the goddess of nature, and its through her a ranger gets the power to control an animal as a pet. Melandrus assault is giving the pet more power than it normally has for this attack, this power comes from Melandru, hence the name.
Naming an attack after the person that made it famous is stupid? Famous Amos cookies, Orivlle Redenbackers popcorn. Frank Perdues chicken, ect.
So it starts with a verb, big deal! The main point is that it explains what it does very well. Companion heal. I cant imagine anyone not being able to figure that out.
Not going to speak on the translation, thats something that needs to be brought to ANets attention, perhaps.
Sonic Breaker? Where in the workd did you get that idea? Theres nothing sonic involved, nor does it break anything.
