Referals? Good or Bad?

Everytime I go to My Profile, I have 0 Referrals, other people have more. Are they bad or good? I am unsure because referrals are bad in school :P

When you create an account, you can stick in the name of an existing forum member. That person gets a referral.
It doesn't offer any kind of tangible benefit, it's just something extra many forums have.

I can dupe referrals, just drop a stack of ecto on the floor.

I have 2, therefore I'm 2x better than everyone else.

I heard that you get into a secret forum section when you get 10 referrals :O

Referrals on some sites give bonuses, for bringing new members, but for guru it's nothing important afaik...
