Running GW on a 64-bit system
Mallybum
Hello, I've recently made a new compy and running Vista Home Premium 64-bit on it. In the last few updates my GW has crashed my entire system completely. The only similarities when the crashes occur is when I try to enter Kamadan. I'm just wondering if any other 64-bit users out there has found a way to get around this problem? Oh I've redownloaded the client twice already to see if there was any errors and so forth. I also read on the PlayNC support site that they don't support 64-bit systems yet.
My system specs are:
Quad Core Q6600
4 GBs of 800mhz RAM
two 8800GTs in SLi
using onboard mobo soundcard

Never had a problem with 64 bit Vista Home Premium. What I would suggest it when you have GW open, Ctrl+Alt+Del and right click on gw.exe
Then click set affinity, uncheck all but core 0. It maybe your quad that may be the issue.

Hmmm that seemed to have worked but now my sound is all messed up and distorted. I tried to only use two of the cores to trick it into think it's a Duo Core but it only delayed my crashing. I guess I'll have to find a way to either mute the sounds when playing or try to use another core to play only the sound features (most likely will have to end up muting).
Thanks Lord Xeshm

Hang on, you invested in two graphics cards for SLi yet didn't bother to stump up £25 for a dedicated sound card?

sounds like the system is just undercooled (aka not enough cooling in it) guildwars for one strange reason get's graphics cards really hot and the 8800gt's arent the coolest cards either that's one, 2 nvidia refuses to decently up the fan speed of the fans on their cards leaving the fanspeed at 43% which is not enough.
You can download ntune on the nvidia site but i'm not a huge fan of that one, a way better alternative is rivatuner which you can download over at www.guru3d.com that should fix the crashing problem and the soundproblem (that is atleast if you're drivers are up to date)
If there is anything else just send me a pm

Try running Guild Wars 'as administrator'.

Ok so here's the update. I sent in a problem ticket to NCSoft's support site for GW and they said something along the lines of since I'm using beta drivers for my video cards I should download the official "bug free" ones. I did it and it's still messed up so I sent them another copy of my DxDiag. So far no reply due to it being the weekend and everything.
Anyways I tried the whole RivaTuner thing and had my cards' fan speed at 100% so that they won't be undercooled but I seriously doubt cooling is an issue with my computer. I have an Antec 900 case which has two 5 fans sucking in air from the bottom front while another 5 inch fan blowing air out from the top back and a 8 inch fan blowing air out on top of the case. Also the cards are very spaced apart from anything. Nonetheless GW crashed my system again.
Another problem I think I might run into is the lack of power supplying my system. Here's a full listing of what's in my rig.
Quad Core Q6600
CPU cooler Arctic Freeze 7
two XFX 8800GT 512MB DDR3
EVGA Mobo n680i SLi
Seagate 500GB Sata drive
Samsung DVD+-R burner
two sticks of 2GB Patriot RAM 800mhz
all of this is powered by a OCZ 700Watt PSU with SLi support
Oh and nothing is overclocked and the only mods I have done is to increase the fan speeds.

Your setup is very similar to mine, and it looks like you have sufficient power to those components, could you describe the crash to me? (Does just the client close, system freezes/restarts?, bsod, nvlddmkm.sys error, etc)
Mallybum
Well the crash basically starts off by my character freezing in mid step but the sound is still playing. I'm still able to move my mouse but not able to bring up the task manager menu to manually stop the GW.exe program. Then after a minute the music stops playing and gets stuck on a note. The whole computer is locked up and I could not move my mouse or type or anything. I think manually hit the power button on my case to restart my computer.

It could be a driver related issue. Since you're on Vista, I'll recommend a 3rd party driver.

Just remember to uninstall your previous drivers first.

Okay i got basically same issues as you but i'm on Windows XP Pro 32 bit
Intel Quad Q6600
APG ATI 1950 Pro
2x 1gig Crucial Memory
Everything else runs fine. After seeing your problams i wonder if it has to do with the Quads and GW. Got a friend that has GW don't play it anymore and he just got a Quad. So maybe i need to make him play it on my weekend to see if he locks up also. But it does the same thing yours is doing.

I use a quad as well, no problems with me. Guild Wars, runs flawless @76 FPS stable.
The way it's locking up, it could only be an unstable component or a driver conflict.

I was thinking might be my Sound. Because way it reverbs through it. It's onboard. 7.1 Surround setup on it. So i been sorta looking into getting new mobo and video. But quite abit of money to dump just to take chance on this issue.
Now every other game i play it don't lock up on me.
As for drivers i've gone through changed drivers, for video. Also made sure all the mobo drivers are current etc. Also only running on the newest DX 9c was released in Nov. i think it was.

If that be the problem, apply the command line -nosound and report results.

So I tried the whole third party drivers from omegadrivers.net.... Needless to say it took me to an unhappy place and i completely lost the ability to use my screen unless I went into safe mode. I even did a full uninstall on the previous drivers and started from scratch. So in the meantime I reverted back to the nVidia's 169.25 Forceware Vista 64 bit drivers. They don't play well with GW but at least I can see what's on my screen. Also I'm still waiting to hear back on my support ticket from NCSoft.
moriz
unhappy place, as in black zebra stripes down your monitor? i get that as well. the latest omega drivers have some serious issues on some machines.

So I think along the way of trying to figure what went wrong with my GW crashing, it somehow fixed itself. I think it was because of the graphics cards overheating / playing around with the nvidia control panel. It may have been when I tried to set the AA settings to override the application settings to run at the highest settings. Anyways thanks for all your help.
