If I put a healer on avoid combat, will it still try to heal the party or will it just hide in the back and do nothing? Thanks.

It will heal and run in circles when it gets attacked.

So is it better to put a monk on avoid combat or guard?

Avoid. If it is on guard it will stand there and take the beating till it is like 1/2 or 1/3 health then will start to kite. Guard it will attack and avoid it won't just to throw that out there.

What about elementalists? Guard? Warriors fight or guard?

You want your damage dealers to guard. If they're on avoid combat, they really won't do much. I only put monks on passive/avoid combat.

Anyone doing damage should be on GUARD. Even, and especially the melee classes. Anyone not dealing damage should be on AVOID. As mentioned, putting Monks on AVOID means they do not attack things, will run away from things attacking them, and keep themselves healthy to focus on keeping you healthy. AVOID only affects their abililty to deal damage. They will still target the team, heal the team, buff the team, etc.

Melee on ATTACK will often cause aggro problems. They tend to target enemies farther away then you want to deal with, pull in extra groups, and aggro groups before you are ready. Having them on GUARD will still allow them to attack, but not until you do, or you are getting attacked.
