What does +1 mean?

The best I can gather from context clues is that it is used to signify a comment in a doomed thread...almost like "one comment more than would be expected based on the life expectancy of the thread". Is this right?

I searched the QA forum FAQS because I remember seeing a section about
common abbreviations, but couldn't find it...could someone send me that link please?

Basically. That and it ups your post count by 1. Counts toward the title under you name.

+1 as in "The only reason I posted is to ADD ONE to my post count"

I believe +1 just indicates that someone has added one to their post count.

Your post count goes up by +1 everytime you make a post, except in the Off Topic & Absurd forums.

Click on your name, then 'view public profile' to see how many posts you have so far.
