I'm a elementalist, and currently level 16. I'm only one mission away from being able to ascend. Is it in any way possible to kill him at level 16? Or do you have to be level 20?

I easiest way to kill him is just to buy a couple of spirits... i usually get around ranger 4. Then just kill him as he wastes the first 15-20seconds setting spirits. Still very easy to do even in hardmode.

Remember, the Doppleganger has a long bow and an axe. Depending on what your 2ndary profession is, you can really have it easy.
/W - equip frenzy, don't use it, but he/she will.
/R - bring pet, as far as I know, the doppleganger has no pets.
/N - enfeeble, incidious parasite (cast those and sit and watch)
/Me - Backfire and flare. Cast only backfire (maxing Domination magic)
/Mo - I'd say healing breeze, but I think the doppleganger now uses it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to ascend in order to change your 2ndary?
Shadow Form is an Assassin elite, since the OP didn't specify what campaign the ele is from, once can only assume that the ele is Prophicies born. Thus, obtaining that elite is almost impossible, unless they get runs and help to cap that elite, which then, the OP did ascend.

The thing is that if you need others' advice to beat him at level 16, you'd be better off questing until level 20 and understanding the game better.

here is the fastest way to beat the doppleganger in at L15. about 10-20secs in HM. It can be done with R/ or /R ranger. Fastest way to get to survivor 100,000XP and then to get Guardian (easy extra 2,000XP) :P

It was very easy, we just went across to GWEN and did the first few quests to get the Norn Blessing - Ursan and then went to Augury Rock to do the doppleganger (after the other missions of course). It;s easy, the doppleganger is stupid so they cast all the spirits first. each one takes 5 seconds to cast so you basically have 7*5 = 35 sec before the dopple will do anything at all.
Just cast Ursan and claw him to death. So safe even the kiddies at home can do it.

I just brought /me along with [skill=text]signet of midnight[/skill], [skill=text]clumsiness[/skill], [skill=text]empathy[/skill] and [skill=text]signet of clumsiness[/skill].
Blind him with sig of midnight and he won't be able to do any damage to you, spam the other skills on recharge to damage him. Don't attack back, only use the skills.
