Reacting to dissapoint

First of all this is not a QQ thread.

Basically today a couple of guildies and I were in the midst of a HM FoW clear. We were doing great having finished 7/11 quests including a clear of the burning forest (the hardest area in FoW IMO). Well were in the midst of heading to the tower of strength when we accidently way over aggroed some of the shadow patrols. Everything happened so quickly and suddenly all of us were dead.

None of us were really angry, the general feeling was just total surprise at first followed by pretty big feeling of disappointment. This would have been our first HM FoW clear and we were looking forward to potentially getting some of the new weapon skins from the end chest. We're not the most experienced PvE guild and had spent a good 2 hrs in FoW already leading up to our wipe.

After we got back to ToA, all of us were silent for about 5 mins and then just kinda said our goodbyes and logged off. We weren't angry or pissed off just disappointed and well, didn't feel like playing anymore.

Now I ask the rest of you, how do you react to these kinds of disappointment? WHat i mentioned above was just an example that just happened to me about 30 mins ago. Your stories could be just failing to kill Mallyx or just falling short of that HoH victory, I'm just wondering how you all react to these things. Do you brush it off and just pick yourself up again? or do you quit the game and throw a tantrum?

OP, I know what you mean. I've had a few endgame/elite mission fails, usually after a brutal uphill struggle. It's a pretty big morale killer to get near the end of a long, difficult area and than realize that for one reason or another, you have to give up.

Usually I just do what you do. No anger, no depression or real sadness, just a kind of quiet disappointment followed by doing something else for a few days. TBH it makes it that much sweeter when you get what you want.

Edit: Oh, I see what you did there, Ryker.

I guess I'm usually not too disappointed when something like that happens. I'd only be really upset if I'm strict on time, but I wouldn't play Guild Wars if that were so.

Anyho, back when I was still noob, I rolled a monk and logged into the old HoH.
Some totally random PuG picked me up, we somehow made it to Courtyard. I was ecstatic... holy shit, we were nearly there! I could just smell that sweet, sweet Crystalline

Yeah. We wiped in 30 seconds. Except me <3 I ran to the centre and proceeded to spam Heal Area on everyone.

We lost Back at outpost, the usual round of 'omg u noobs suck' and we all buggered off.
Was a laugh. Whatever happens, always laugh! It's better that way.

Exactly.
It's all for fun, not to sweat.
What's really an indicator of a n00b run, is when Rac demotes, promotes, demotes Knoll again, more than 2 times a night...then we know we sucked.

Haha, yeah. I've been in a few situations like that, like when my guild spends 3 hours doing a full HM DoA run and then get miserably wiped at the last moment by Mallyx. I generally don't make a big deal of it even though I'm frustrated and disappointed. If it's something quick (like a hard mission in my newb days) I'd just try again, or I log off and try again later for longer missions such as DoA. Besides, although winning feels great, the journey there is just as much fun! Or at least it should be .

Guild and I spent 3 hours in Citadel in Everquest 2. It's a raid instance.
Once we got to the end we found it was bugged and the boss encounter wasn't being flagged.
We were pretty bummed out and left one by one. Some people just walked around the instance and eventually left. A lot of work so easily went up in smoke. It's like spending 3 hours working hard on a document that gets erased.
It's a motivation killer.

Thats what I say, when I play with a randomg PUG, and people run around like chickens and do strange things. Last night I played MONK in a forgeweight run, we did...so and so... It was slow and people died here and there, but we moved forward. I kept on screaming on everyone why they dont call, and just hit random targets and generally play like idiots. The guy responded: "its just a game" , Well DUH! I think everyone is aware of that it is a game, but you do invest time in it, and when you invest couple of hours in a Dungeon just to get wiped before someone do something stupid, it goes from being just a game to become a huge waste of time. .

So to all of you that say. "Its just a game" here is the reply: WE KNOW ITS A GAME! WE PLAY IT BECAUSE ITS A GAME! BUT DONT WASTE MY TIME!..

OP "Inger" you have my comforts, shit happens. It will feel better after a couple of hours.

PS. We did manage to kill forgeweight after some close wipes.

QFT. Then we get to see Racthoh rage about what went wrong and then not log on for a couple days while he stews. The rest of us just get over it and move on.

Say "Dang... That sucked. Oh well. We'll go again some day ". Then shortly after re-plan, figure out what we did wrong and what to do to fix it. Then when people have time, get back to it. It could be a day, it could be a year.

I tend to only group with people for the fun, so don't really get too bummed-out if stuff goes tits-up. ^_^ I figure if you have fun and learn something that's what counts.

All entirely depends on what mood I'm in when it happens. Though honestly, my mood can greatly affect my playing ability, too. Earlier this week, for instance, my wife and I were planning to do Bogroot HM. We set up our skills/heroes, bought a few lockpicks, and headed out. I wasn't paying much attention, because I really didn't feel like playing for some reason, and accidentally overaggroed two groups of Raptors and one group of Angorodon. We wiped pretty quickly, and even though it was the first groups we ran into, I just blew up and exited the game pronto.

So, we tried it again a few days later, same builds and everything, and breezed through it all with no deaths (and no overaggroing). I also realized I was actually enjoying myself the whole time. Seems to be linked

Still, I have had instances where our team wiped and I was in a good mood. I find that I actually enjoy myself win or lose. It also prompts me to find out what went wrong, and just try again. If we win the next time through, it feels even sweeter than it would if we had won the first time.

I think it also matters if you're doing it for fun, or for accomplishment. If it's for fun, and you lose, you tend to have a "oh well" attitude. If it's for accomplishment, and you lose, well, it can be very frustrating. Especially if it's something you've done before, and had no problems, then suddenly your team wipes. It's kind of a "WTF?" moment.

*sigh.

Yea I gave it a week before playing again... Did it this time. =) just get the inspiration to get back up and doooo it again. >=)

For the OP. I know the feeling. But the thing about FOW and UW is to know when to run. That's why all of my guildies whenever we do FOW and UW all carry Rebirth.

its better to run than to lay to waiste 2 hrs + of work.

I had a situation today that got me a little down.

Looked for a PUG for Attack the Gates or whatever in EotN. Read the wiki, just don't have the understanding/skills/heros/whatever to get'r done.

After about 15 mins (not long) we all get killed, while waiting to resurect first person quits.

As soon as we re-spawn I hit a clover & got 12% - mentioned it and everyone was like , wow , ty and it was all good.

After about another 10 mins it was obvious that myself and one other player were the only ones that consulted wiki and had any idea of what to do.

So we all die again.

Another quitter.

Players left still aren't listening, we all die again.

Now it's me & dude spawning in, gate has about 1/3 strenght left.

Then I realize it's me and the one hero monk someone brought, 6 people quit.

I gotta admit, left me feeling a little dissapointed and mad at myself for "wasting" the clover.

Meh, switched to my lvl11 Paragon and had some fun killing plants

3.5 hours FoW with balanced PUG. Mage died while we were in halfway through 10/11 quests.

Not to mention the several wipes in Urgoz, in that room close before last, with all the vampires.

Or clearing the deep, then being unable to kill Kanaxai.

You name it, I've been there.

have been in the same situation (dang banshee)....hubby and I were doing clearing with our heroes....the first weekend we tried it the griffons died and we said AWH MANNN....and logged off for a while....

a few weekends later and the dang banshee got itself killed....so we said AWH MANNNNNN! and figured if we had cleared it on our first (or this our second run) we probably would say FOW is just tooo easy and probably not go there again.

Now its more like a challenge to see if we can kill the stuff before the npcs get themselves nicked. ....glad we didnt do it on our first try looking back on it.
(hubby always complains the game is tooo easy...now he feels fow is a challenge again!)

Now we know to be much more careful (and micro manage the heroes when needed).....

we had a balanced group going through Urgoz. took us about 2.5 hours to get to the big plant himself, and we had 3 people log off along the way. The battel starts, and suddenly, the EoE ranger forgets how the boss fight works... they cannot seem to cast EoE in the right place, and it keeps getting blown up. long story short, we went thru a 45 minute boss fight, and everyone rage-quit.

my reaction: I sat and stared blankly at the screen for a while, watching Urgoz laugh triumphantly. Then I left ans joined a Deep group. who needs that tree anyway? =P

Worst ones for me was losing my first couple of survivor attempts.

First one had got a warrior up to about 300k, across from Factions to Prophesies, did the normal mode ascension fine, then attempted hard mode ascension (not realising there wasn't a second big xp boost for hm ascension) - and a few seconds later had a death.

Stared at the screen for a couple of minutes, then logged out for a few days. Couldn't get angry at anyone...I mean, it was a copy of myself that killed me!

Second try was with a Paragon. Had got through the Desert, did ascension in both normal and HM, and was doing the EoTN quests during a triple xp weekend. Had completed the Norn and was up to the last of the Char quests, when we ran into Rocktail.

Hadn't seen Rocktail previously...the life bond from my hero monk failed and PS had either just ended or been stripped (we'd been fighting nymphs when Rocktail ran in behind us) just as he launched a siege attack at me...and I went "WTF just happened?" - I had been hit for 2 shots of something like 260 damage each ... 520hp damage and an insta-dead paragon (from not-quite full health - was running around with ~560hp max)...

Again, swore a bit, and logged out for a few days. Felt extremely cross about insta-death uniques - but also realised that I really shouldn't have been taking my Para into an area I hadn't yet been with another char...even if it was a triple xp weekend.

Took about a week after that one before I could face logging in again

When stuff like this happens I do one of 2 things. Totally flip out and close GW, turn on some VERY loud music and play a game that's a little more violent. Or I remain completely quiet, close GW, and even though I'll be furious, I'll sit and try to figure out what went wrong if it's not already obvious to me.

Hard to decide which one happens more often.

The only time things like this happen is when I'm almost done vanquishing an area then realize I have some random quest that spawns a bajillion enemies that were clearly meant to be fought while in normal mode. Or when my party wipes because I was stupid and forgot to bring an interrupt for that level 30 Elementalist boss that spams Searing Flames on anything that moves.

The only other thing I can think of that causes that degree of frustration is when our guild splits up for the 1654621698th time and reforms 4 days later because someone took something personally that was meant as a joke.

I just started doing hm fow a couple weeks ago (with pugs), and while most runs go okay, occasionally one will go wrong, but I don't really stress about cause hey, they're pugs, what do you seriously expect from them? The one thing that really pissed me off though was this last week, we were doing fine through the beginning, but someone took tower of strength even though we said not to before hand. The tower mage followed us, and, of course, got stuck. Now, usually, I've been able to get the mage unstuck with a vampiric weapon, but this time, he kept on following me but then running back into a wall. We spent half an hour doing this before we all quit. At this point i was a little disappointed, but I thought "eh, well, bugs are bugs". Got back to toa and noticed there was a new build, so i quit and looked at the update page to find out that the new build fixed the tower mage. Now, while this certainly was a good fix, having it come right after my only failure due to said bug was rather frustrating to say the least , so I just logged off for the day and drowned my sorrows in comedy.

The last time I felt disappointed with this game wasn't when I lost my ass survivor while brawling at 800k yesterday (I just deleted the guy and made a new one) - it was a few days ago when i completed Cyndr (or whatever that guy is called). It is such INSANELY bad PvE design - that I just lost the will to continue. So I just quit the thing and let it cool down a bit. And I pretty much only finished the story because I needed to unlock HM for brawling.
I kinda have no desire to go through Gwen again ...

It's been so long since I've failed in Guild Wars that I can't remember. I probably yelled obscenities at my screen and went back again for more until I got what I wanted. Failure in life is another story.

When I'm in a group in FoW that fails, it's because someone did something to annoy me. It could be something like map pinging or map penis drawings which result in my aggroing and intentionally destroying the run. If I'm in a group with cool people, fail from over aggro doesn't exist because as soon as it's about to happen, I've already headed in another direction, prepared to resurrect. I haven't encountered failure in Guild Wars for a long time, or the light of day outside my home.

A tactic which has finally stayed with me after many, many failures is, look at your compass, then, look at whatever else you need to. Repeat this every few seconds. This is similar to driving in heavy traffic, to keep people from ramming into you. Also, read up Guild Wiki.

I'm just sharing a couple of hints in hopes of helping the 1% of the Guild Wars community that doesn't annoy me that use this site.

It's silly to get mad at stuff like that, especially if you're in a group I do get kinda frustrated at myself if I kow I've been stupid though, or if I'm just not doing something well enough andget the feeling I'm hitting my head against a brick wall. If that happens I'll log, or go do something I'm much better at in game.

A good way to avoid wipes in places like that (with no res shrines) is to make sure at least one of your party knows to run like hell, out of the agro, if you get swamped. That player should bring rebirth...lol Always helps.

You think that's disappointment? Well I was doing an FoW clear on my monk, HM. Ursan run and we were at 1 hour and 20 minutes. Well some guy went to get the griffons and it was the last quest we had to finish. One of the griffons ran to us after we took the quest so we had to bring him. Well someone aggroed a group of shadows, I didn't see what happened only seeing the griffon charging in to get these shadows. I put a heal on him but he was under 10% health left (I couldn't run fast enough to him) and we lost.

That's disappointment.

Was doing UW with a team last week I think, and we got to to the reaper of the twin serpent mountains, then the ghost triggered and got blown up from all the traps. I was annoyed but I had fun and the team was great.

I also lost a leg survivor 100k from max due to a d/c. I was annoyed but just didnt play the char for a few months. Now my para's my fave char.

Sometimes I get angry if someone does something on purpose after we tell them not to, but meh really. Get much more angry in PS games. :P
