Presuming he
added the key to his original account, he should be able to move between continents by using the boat icon on the world map. Lion's Arch is the port city in Tyria (Prophecies) and Kamadan is the port city in Elona (Nightfall).
If he instead created a new account, then he has 2 accounts and each only has access to 1 continent.
To determine whether he added the key to his original account or created a new one, check to see if any of his original characters are now in Elona. If so, then he must have added the key, since otherwise they couldn't have changed continents.

he wants to get factions - will that help ?

While it might improve his gameplay experience, it will not help one bit with the problem at hand.

Or is there a way to remove the key from the account and make a new account with only the nightfall key
|
No. Once a key is used, it's used permanently and irrevocably. Moreover, even if you could do so, you wouldn't want to; a single linked account is infinitely better than two (or three) unlinked accounts.

Not that it's any of my business, but 10 is awfully young for GW. It's full of violence, death, betrayal, religious intolerance, and, if you happen have local chat unblocked, profanity, bigotry, and sometimes sexual content from other players. You might want to watch over his shoulder and/or play a bit yourself to see if you're comfortable with him encountering all this right now.
