Hey i need some help what my topic says.
Here are some problems im running into.
When i put the output format on texmod to DDS (which wiki recommends i do),log on, f8 to save the image i want to mod, go to the file where it saved and try to open it up in photoshop it wont let me open it up..same with Gimp also. And when i use BMP with Gimp theres a giant checkerboard on top of the thing i want to mod. anyone know how to get rid of that?
Any ideas?

I had to download a plugin to work with DDS pictures in GIMP. I don't have Photoshop(Adobe wants too much $), but I think you need a plugin for that as well. No idea on the BMP issue you have, but read up on how to use GIMP.

edit: Here is the location for the DDS plugin for GIMP: http://registry.gimp.org/node/70

Both programs require plugins to open DDS.

Place it in the plugin directory and it will be loaded automatically. See the readme file that came with the plugin.

1. Don't use BMP. Use DDS.

2. It's transparency. And it's behind the image, not in front. When an image is transparent and there's no deeper layer that's opaque, GIMP displays the checkerboard pattern. Photoshop does the same thing.
Why are your images transparent? Read this thread.
