I can get thru the graspings no problem, but for the life of me I die everytime at the smites, anyone got any pointers???

If you have full knights armor, a superior absorption run and a shield with -2 damage in stance, you should be taking very little damage and I don't see how you could die.
Try draining the smites energy before attacking. Put up a visage and wait for them to get low energy, then attack. By doing that you should stop them from getting enough energy to cast SoJ.
If you can, try getting a -2/-2 shield, so you'll be taking 2 less damage most of the time. It doesn't seem like a lot, but it really adds up.
