Guild Wars from a USB-Stick?
Fenrir Brightclaw
I recently bought a 4 GB USB-Stick, so I can put games on it and play them at school. It's weekend now, and I won't have to go to school till tuesday. I was wondering if I could put Guild Wars on it, and play straight from the stick (plug and play :P). Anyone think this is possible? We've got good and fast computers at school so that won't be the problem.

Guild Wars is a lil over 4 gigs I think. Miss a few sound files and I'll think its possible
Fenrir Brightclaw
Well, mines 3,35 gig, without some of the latest updates. Lose some of the (edited) screenshots and it's easily possible to fit it on the stick. What i'm interested in is if it'll actually work work, if I will be able to run a big game from a small USB-Stick.
Pyro maniac
Possible with Portable GW
my imaged version of guild wars is at 3,5 gig so that shouldn't be a problem as well

Wow, this might actually work then! I'm going to try that program, Pyro, and see if it works. Though, I can also just play .exe's. Until now I've been mostly playing SNES games with it, and I can just start the .exe of the emulator and play, so why would I need another program for Guild Wars?

All you truly need is to download the client here.
Downloading anyone else's "Portable GW" is just asking to lose your account. I don't claim that that's the case with Pyro Maniac's file. It's just uneccessary to install the game from anywhere other than the official Guild Wars site.
To make things quicker, just copy gw.dat from your computer to your usb stick and transfer it to another computer to avoid having to download everything.

So I can't just move an installed Guild Wars over to my USB-stick and play? That seems weird. All the files are there, or does the GW.exe look on the specific disk where I installed it, instead of just in the main folder? E:\Games\Guild Wars\ whatever instead of (Guild Wars)\.... ?
I'm sorry, I don't know a lot about how computers actually work. Still learning. :P
Also: We got two 30 minute breaks. What else is there to do? I don't have to learn in that time, and I'm not going to sit next to people who try to learn so I won't be bothering them, and I won't be walking in the hallway for 30 minutes.
EDIT: The whole reason I want to play straight from the USB-Stick is because we can't install stuff on the school's computers, and we don't have a lot of room on our spot on the schools server. So that won't work I think...

Yeah, but most of the guys from my class are total assholes, and the guys I do hang out with have weird hobbies (not all of them) like rollercoasters (I'm talking about obsession here). So when I talk to them about the things I like they don't understand, and same thing with their stuff. Ah well, we have fun together and that's all that counts. :P
I'll post here on Tuesday to tell you if it worked or not unless someone has the answer earlier.
EDIT: Oh and yeah the computers are great. We ran a CS lan party once (all computers on the entire floor). Not a second of lag! Makes you wonder why they spend money on that, since according to some kind of school policy they can't let students use they computers for things other than school work (shhhh :P).

it is definately possible. use the portable GW utility, or just install the client and copy the gw.dat file onto the harddrive each time.
keep in mind that most school lab computers do not have graphic cards, so performance will suffer. not to mention, running GW from USB drives will reduce performance as well, since USB drives are not always all that fast.

+1
GaaaaaH
just watch out for intenet charges if your school does that (maybe even their proxy).
Ekelon
Since Guild Wars does not really need any installation, just the .exe file and the .dat file, you can play Guild Wars from anywhere you want essentially.

I think the bigger question is; which school technicians would be dumb enough to not monitor the internet activity and port use of various students >.<
One of my friends, back in high school, accidentally opened the user configuration in the control panel. They were in the room in seconds, threatening him with court action o_O.
Infact they accused me of torrenting in School before I actually knew what a torrent was. They introduced me to something I was totally innocent, at the time of using. In their god damn faces >.>

Ask the administration office in Jacksonville, Florida (aka Duval county)...
But theoretically it is possible with just the .dat and the .exe

Lol... well i used to play gw from usb stick back when it would fit on my usb stick (And back when i was in college :P) you should have no problems so long as you take the whole folder (-the screenshots if you are using xp). The only problem i did encounter was that school computers dont tend to have graphics cards (or very crap ones :P) so you may find that the computers cant run it :P
awmiscool
So.. how does this whole thing work again? And did the gw portable thing work? I think itd be really cool to do

Hey, I see the last post was a week ago, but I was wondering if anyone was able to even download the Portable GW App? The link listed here only goes to a place holder, not a file. Google has given me more old links that no longer work.
I guess I just need to know if you can run it with the EXE file + GW.DAT file on your USB Drive or do I need a 3rd party program to play GW from a USB Drive.
Thanks for your help.
