I don't know if this is the right forum (could be Q&A as well), however:
why are the monk tomes (and only the monk tomes) going over 1k?
Tomes are basically cheaper skills with a restriction (unlock).
Buying at a skill trader is cheaper ..

Say you make a new monk character and you want access to something to help you move along, say, Shield of Absorption? Your options are to either wait until you can get it halfway through the game from a trainer, or...buy a monk tome! Monks are the universal character that everybody wants from the start, so some people want a great monk from the first second. I'm not one of those people, but I'm more than happy to help them out for 1.2k

simple.
not everybody has the nerve to wait untill let's say ember light camp to unlock some skill its quicker to buy a tome (if you have to money) and unlock it that way
monk tomes also are so expensive because monks aren't the easiest/commonest foes so the drop rates are pretty low compared with lets say ranger/warrior
