Okay, so I had no idea where to post this, i didn't see a questions forum or subforum.
I'm an old player of Guild Wars, I started when it was released, quit for a year, got a new graphics card and came back around March 2006.
I quit when the beta for GW factions ended.
Today I have come back to capture some in game screenshots for a highschool project. But lo and behold, I downloaded a seemingly small 140MB client for eye of the north? I then tried reinstalling my CD version, but it still displayed eye of the north.
When i log in it says I am not authorized to play Guild Wars, and i need to purchase a version from the store. However I read the FAQ and it still says I should never have to pay more than 1 fee per game.
What's the deal? How do I begin playing again? Will my 2 level 20 characters still be there?
I'm confused.

I think this is for the troubleshooting section.
Guild wars works as a single game which parts you have access to depending on the keys your account has. Currently GW build includes 'Eye of the North', and that's why the login screen is for the expansion.
If you had a character made in the beta, it should be locked, since the beta finished, and you'll have to acquire factions to be able to play again with it. But the rest made in Prophecies should still be there and working, unless your account were stolen or something like that.
Definitely, you'll have to send a support ticket with the Issue to NCsoft/Anet.

1.Q&A forum
2.i'd call Anet about this. your account should stay active, but you need to buy each expansion in order to play it.

You can't play Eye of the North. You should just download the basic client from the Guild Wars main site. If all else fails, uninstall, download the basic client, and be prepared to wait for a long download.

I just looked.
And when i downloaded the basic client, it was automatically the eye of the north. There was no download on the site that I could find for the basic client.

That's strange, it should automatically try to log you on to whatever version you have access to.
Check that you downloaded from http://www.guildwars.com/support/downloadclient/
Other than that...hmmm.
Oh, and here's the link to Q&A:
