What's the trick to this quest? How can the bear be killed with the club?

Took 12 tries to get the reward. The quest seems to randomly award victory. First 11 attempts ended in defeat. There was no reason for the defeat.

Is there any reason to keep this club that does 2 damage?

Afaik you don't have to use the club from start to finish (might have been fixed). You can use any skills you like, but I think you have to be fighting with the club when it dies.

I'm not sure what profession you are, I'll assume Necromancer from your Guru profile thing. I'd try going 16 Blood Magic and taking a bunch of lifestealing skills. I don't know much about Necros, but Life Transfer seems acceptable to me here. Remember you won't be killing anything here other than the bear so Soul Reaping can be left at 0 if you want to spec into another line (or take PvE only skills).

Just get creative with it really, I tried beating it down with the hammer @ 16 Hammer Mastery with Deep Wound and the like and I couldn't get that last sliver of health off him.

Or you can spirit spam and use Ebon Escape on a norn outside of the 'circle'

Easiest is just to do the ebon escape route and teleport outside the circle and just use ranged attacks while holding the club (or switch when it's about to die).

i used riposte until he was about dead and then switched to the club and finished him with "finish him!"
Not the best build but worked...
