Noob weapons question

Sorry for the noob post butI have a question. When you use a weapon that you don't meet the req for is it only the damage that is effected? Do you still get the energy or enchantment buff? Say i'm a monk with a totem axe. Do i still get the +5 energy and 20% enchantments?
