How do I get a pet from aggressive to elder?

I leveled a Rainbow Phoenix to aggressive at level 11 with Snow Wurms outside Grotto.

I then proceeded to carry it with me on a bunch of Ursan runs in FoW (high damage from me, minimal damage from pet) to get it to elder.

At level 20, it's still aggressive...

I did it again with a new pet; same result.

What do you guys do to get it going on the hearty path? I see almost every other Ranger with a hearty pet; yet I can't get mine to go on that path...

Hearty Pet? That's hard for you?

1. Charm pet.
2. 0 Beast Mastery.
3. Kill stuff yourself with your weak pet tagging along/rotting on the ground.
4. ???
5. HEARTY!!

As for Elder, I remember just playing normal with a few points in BM and getting a pet there a long time ago, but I don't believe I could give you detailed information on how to do it. I'd suggest you try the wikis, of course.

Just let your pet die alot, while ressurecting it everytime.

Not sure why you'd want an elder anyway, Dire is my personal pet of choice, and Hearties are harder to kill.

Lennymon's magic advice worked for me:
Level from 5 to 12 (not 11) in aggressive beastmaster mode, then level from 12 to 15 in pet-tags-along mode.

Check out this thread.

I let it tag along with me on FoW Ursan runs with 0 Beast Mastery and it still didn't evolve into elder at level 20. So tagging along doesn't really seem to work.

Dire dies to quickly in HM. Hearty has crappy damage. So I want an elder.

Why to level 12? Is there a reason for that?
