I like going for themes with my characters. Only two are loosely based off me, but thats only because I had the haircut at one point during my life, so I wanted to pay homage to it by making two "me" inspired brother characters. The rest are themed though, I think about the character's personality first and for most (basically what armor hes going to wear, because thats as much decision room as we get in GW). So if hes noble, or humble, or evil or good, or just neutral. I treat making characters almost as if, say developers from bioware came to my door to hand feed me all the info on their next upcoming RPG- but asked me what kind of "iconic" characters I'd like to see it. I'd think of creative/unique people, some leaders some followers etc etc, really just mix it up and take some inspiration from other RPG's. Now my problem with GW is that we can only be a main character in a world in which "you can do what ever you want", that is how most MMO's are advertised. I never really ever wanted to make a character that was well.. "the main character", I mean thats just too locking to the player's freedom. If you're going to let me make a character, don't make me play a prototype role.

If I can, I make my characters look like me, however, that is hard to do as nothing I have seen resembles me that much. The closest face I can get to me is a warrior, which I do not really like playing. For the gender of the avatars. I use to have equal of both *I am a guy btw* but others kept thinking I was a girl and there was constant warriors "humping" my female characters. So I no longer have any female characters.

i have a bunch of toons, probably works out to be half male, half female. i play mostly my male toons these days.... female toons are fun to play for something different, but i used to play only female toons when i started playing gws.
the faces an hair options in gws dont really look like me, but i've never aspired to make a toon that looks like me. like people have said previously, for me gws is a fantasy game and somewhere to escape real life

Hey Roth
You've seen my mes - I tried to get her hair and face as close to mine as possible. I never bothered with my other characters - though I did make sure they all have reddish brown hair.

Despite the fact that I'm female like all my characters, there's none who looks like me. I choose females because I can only roleplay a female, and all the toons that were not attractive to my tastes never lived to have even one elite armor. Since females are more graceful and have better looking armor, I never even thought to have a male ^^ .
Each one of my 10 characters have her own way to be : If my mesmer like to have her ennemies at her dainty feet and sometimes gloat about it, my sin is a more impassive sort of killer with a "if it's not strong enough, then it should be killed" attitude.

I'm male but have all female chars.
My main char is my female ele with FOW armour.
I have recently made myself some FOW armour that I now wear at home and at work.
We both also wear glasses.

I don't get why guys hit on girl avatars, when it's such a well-known fact that there's a 40% or less chance that there's actually a girl behind the keyboard.
anyway, since I know quite a few people on guild wars IRL, we have fun "roleplaying" together when playing guild wars, i.e act like our fictional avatars. I don't think I would've liked Guild wars so much if I didn't have the chance to do that.

All my characters are female. I find the only one who has ever been 'hit on'...well, asked to do a strip tease, anyways, was my ranger.
Internetz people are odd.
Olim Chill
Whenever I create a character I instinctively select physical features similar to mine. Can't help it.

Of 9 PvE characters, I have 3 female characters, which won't look any thing remotely like me, unless I grow a pair of breasts, and my manhood implodes into a, err... womanhood... Something about a guy in a skirt/dress rubs me the wrong way (Derv/Para), and I don't like how the male Mesmers' armors look. So, of the 6 male characters, I tend to make them look like me. Besides my warrior, I think all my guys have a goatee with black hair (except my bald monk). So there are exceptions, but I do try to go for something as close as I can get...
NinjaKai
Only character I made look like myself is my mesmer. Apart from that I tend to go with what professions I like playing and whether they are female or male simply comes down to which I think the armor looks best on.

9 female char, caue they look better than male.

Almost all of mine are female for the eye candy. It's much less rewarding to dress up a male warrior in a 15k gladiator bra.

but seriously what would you rather stare at all day a hot chick or a tubby guy?... on that note
I have never made a male character since my mistake of making my first character male....
its pretty well known in gw that all female characters are male.... because kids the eternal truth of the internet is the following
men = men
women = men
children = FBI
Rothan Celt
XD
Nice children = FBI
It always bugs me when i see little monks running around the place
AS for me i am a dude and i play dudes because quite simply they are my avatar and they must represent me :P
I have taken avatar picking seriously i only ever pick dudes because i am one :P

some of are just hawt cuz i felt like it. Best armor is no armor when playing female chars... (15k glads anyone?)
Avatar does not represent you.... and thinking that others think the same in GW is pure ignorance. I tend to think of that tubby male wammo as the ULTIMATE representation of a "NOOB". So when I see female chars I tend to think they are more experienced players. Just my biased viewpoint I guess, but I can't be the only one.

None of my characters look like me, I've never wanted them too look like me either. All my characters are male because... it just felt weird playing as a female char (wammo's thinking ur a girl and hitting on you ftl). I have 4 PvE characters and only use one (my elementalist), the rest are PvP... my pvp ranger which I play with carries all my elementalists armor.. my monk carries random weapons I am supposed to sell, the dervish has various items I haven't sold, and the other character carries nothing as I delete him often (I am not spending money for character slots ).

All of my characters are male except for two, my Ele and Necro, simply because the armors look better on females for those classes.

My dervish sorta looks like me. Other than that, nope.

I used to look like my necromancer, but now my hair is totally different. And everyone knows necromancers never go to the hairdresser.
I have one of each profession in both genders for pve, except for male monk, paragon and ritualist, because I just can't get attached to them. Too few options for ritualists, I don't like any male monk hair, and I know too many handsome ritualists to make one that feels like 'mine'. (I just get... oooh I made a Tidus/Amergin/Ptolomy... doh). When I make them I go for what seems to me like the most attractive options, but if there seems to be a hairstyle or face that EVERYONE has then I try to avoid it (female dervish, for ex).
I have slightly more female characters than male, because of my problems with rit/mo/para, but if not for these then it would be 50:50. I generally choose female avatars, but eventually I always end up wanting one of the opposite, because my friend has a very nice one, or because there's an armour set I want. Doesn't bother me to play males, they're not ME, they're in a game. And now I have some armour that covers my warrior's beefy thighs, all is good with the world.
