just make a PvP char...

It's easier than getting stuff ready with a PvE char..

Not sure about guides, but you need:

40/40 Sets (All elements)
Defensive Sets (Martial with +5E, +30hp and shield +10ALvs(type) +30hp.
Full Survivors' Armour with +1 headpiece for your main element, +1 rune for your main element, +1 to a secondary element (such as Ward Against Melee) Superior Vigor and Vitae runes.
High energy set (dual 15/-1 with 20% HCT/HRT mods)

I think that's it.

You can always use Reward Points for 15k sets ect.
And unlock weapons, which you can customise to that character aswell, but if you're doing that, just get a PvE char imo...

That.

and my 4th set is usually a 2x 20% HCT/20% HSR/+20% ench staff to cast my attunements.

All the above.

And some guilds are nice enough to train new people in PvP. GvG is a good way to learn. So I hear anyway.

Just out of curiosity -- don't attunements last long enough?

Sure, they already last pretty long. But with a +20% ench mod it lasts even longer

I only use that staff when I don't need another set tho. Like when I go air/earth. The staff(4th set) is replaced by a 40/40 earth set.

So yes, it's not really needed
But if you don't need another set, it still helps, as it lengthens the duration for free.

Its always good to have an enchanting set and a fortitude set. Switching weapon sets is one of the key skills to learn in PvP. Before casting an attunement or casting aegis, switch to enchanting.

I understand that you want to look cool, but I never notice what armor the bad guys are wearing when we're killing each other.

But if looking good is your goal, I suggest that you make a PvP toon and try out the suggestions that the folks have given you, settle on a build and armor set up that you can live with, and then set up your PvE toon to match it.

Fernando once said, "It's better to look good, than to feel good. You look mahvelous dahling... Absolutely mahvelous."
