Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to find out how traits are passed from one generation to the next using fruit flies. One thing we already know about Drosophila Melanogaster, or commonly called fruit flies, is they are small and easy to take care of. They live about eight weeks if they are properly cared for. Fruit flies do not eat all that much and are easy to store. The fruit flies that we are experimenting with have red and white eyes with miniature wings.
Methods and Materials
- vial
- at least 8 fruit flies 4 of which are females and four males
- yeast
- water dyed blue
- teasing needle
- Styrofoam plug
- wand
- Instant Drosophila Medium
- Fly Nap
First we put a table spoon of Instant Drosophila Medium in two different vials. Then we fill each vial with water that is dyed blue until it is just above the Instant Drosophila Medium. The last step to preparing the vials is to drop about 5 grains of yeast into each vial.
When we were choosing which type of sex we wanted we knocked the flies out using the wand and the fly nap. We did this by dipping the tip of the wand into the Fly Nap and then put the wand so it is below the Styrofoam plug. Once the flies stop moving we removed the wand. If you leave the wand in the vial for too long the flies could die.
Once we knocked out the flies we looked at them under the microscope and figured out which ones were male and female. To tell if one is a male or a female you look at the flies bottoms. If the fly is dark black at its bottom it is a female. If it isn’t then the fly is a male. You want to know for sure that you have virgin females. To know that you have virgin females you have to take them within eight to twelve hours from when they were born. Virgin females are vital because if they have mated before you won’t know if the female has mated with your flies in the vial.
Date Red eye female Red eye male White eye female White eye male
March 25th 3 4 3 2
April 1st 4 4 4 11
April 7th 5 4 8 12
Totals 12 12 15 25
To count the offspring you have to figure out if they are pupa or larva. then you divide them into red eyed females, red eyed males, white eyed females, and white eyed females. Last you record data.

Red eye males and females and white eye males and females

The results of the offspring were pretty much all the same for the red eyed females throughout the three days. For the red eyed males through all three of the days there were all four.
