I believe each "zone" has a pre defined number of drops - say for eg Uw has 300 enemy in total ( including popups ) - so for arguements sake anet has 300 drop chances ( 1 each for enemy ).
now we all know that gw dont give 1 drop per enemy
If the diff enemy is killed then gw works out first drop chance ( y/n ) then depending on enemy drop type .
Also number of player would come into play but as this is theory we`ll just say 8 man team.
My first try at clearout ( unplanned ) and in 4 man team ( human ) we cleared about 98% of uw without quests and managed 6/10 quests - overall team wise after merching unwanted stuff we totalled about 20k cash , 13 ectos and approx 6 golds - but most ectos were not from smites but a mix of the other droppers.
Personally i have no idea if ecto amount was good/bad or average for entire run but to me was pretty gd.
Btw im not a fan of smite runs - i prefer doing a few quests etc rather than chancing 1k on a 15 min run - my run cud take an hr or 2 depending on team size so 1k entry is made back easily but 4 smite runs with no ectos can mean u pay 4k to earn just over 1k or 2k but i know ppl will disagree with me.
Any views from solo players or team players would be nice , specially team players as we get forgotten about due to heavy solos
Theory behind a string of bad runs

I have done quite a large number of UW clears, and yes, all unashamedly ursan'd. I have averaged 0-4 ectos through the entire run, and then obviously 1-2 from the chest, depending. Most seem to come from the Mesmers in the CHaos Planes, purely because you kill so many enemy in such a small space. I have never found the ecto drop rate to be any different in a team to solo; I've done clears where we've literally had 1 ecto for the whole time, and then clears where we've had so many that the ground gets sticky, and I can complain about it ruining my Monk's shoes.
I just did a W/Rt run solo, and the first group I fought actually dropped 2 ectos. I didn't get a single other ecto the whole run, but that was definitely a nice start to the run.
So yeah, alot of variance. The UW smite run can pay off, or it can suck. I am working towards my third set of FoW now (my Para's) so I'm keeping ectos, and thus I can't really comment on it's overall effectiveness. However, I did once farm 250k for a Vabbi set in 2 days of W/Rt (back in the day of 6.5k ectos).

I think the team thing is misleading - each person has x chance and some assume that it adds up - 8 ppl will have 8 chances team wise but i see it as 1 chance per person . Im not sure with the party size scaling - can it be some places have a deduction of items due to party size but that theoretically increases the chance of drops ( say 1 in 200 is worse than 1 in 150 ) .
One question tho - if it was worked out when to get ectos etc wouldnt it spoil the game due to ectos flooding the market , rare drops not rare anymore and so on - answer would be yes but its the fun trying to find out thats what matters
