If GW went Open Source...

If, after a few years of GW2 being out, GW became open source (with ArenaNet still hosting the servers and accepting patches to the original game if people agreed on them), what would you change? Would you create new missions? Would you work together on mods? Would you change skills? Would you build an entire new game based on the GW engine? The possibilities are endless...

I'd want to:

-Create an OpenGL version
-Add the Xunlai Market
-Get rid of the limit on minions in PvE only

(For anyone not in the know, Open Source means that everyone has access to the source code and core of the game code, and they can freely take it, modify it and share it. The only catch is that they have to release their changes for everyone to get (so they can't just make money from ArenaNet's work)

i would love to create a super hard new area, but all the monsters are level 20. I would give them sweet builds to make it hard, and all the weapons would have rare skins.

Are you going to program new AI with your new super hard area? Because without it, there's really nothing a "sweet" build will do to make PvE harder, beyond a certain point. That point is pretty much the Charr.

finished the god realms. make ecto's a static price.
introduce the ability to share armor.
give the ability to disable lootscaling but only in normal mode.
introduce a xunlai marketplace sort of place.
make the merchant give decent money for good items.
add a inscribtions+upgrade merchant.
giving back the dye remover and the old black dye.
give people another area like sorrow's furnace, but only harder, bigger and with many more bosses/enemies.
adding more elite skills and bosses with better greens, wich actual unique stats that you cannot replicate.

hmm.... thats all i can think off right now

idk, facing bloodspike in pve would be pretty wierd!!!

and all you need to do is add monks to enemy parties (monks with good builds) and the mobs are much harder already.

but yes, a reprogramed ai would certainly help.

I would quit, because the minute you turn a game into open source, the cheats and hacks come out in full force, because now these programmers who make the spam bots, cheats, etc. can read the code for each update, and code a new more effective bot/spammer each time. Hell, it would even get the the point where they could prob manipulate the code so even if you set yourself to Do not Disturb, you could still be PM'd to go buy their gold.

It would become Open Battle.Net like Diablo 2 was. That was a waste of time. God Mode always becomes boring.

Not if Anet were still in charge - they could approve each patch/addition to the game.

Anyways, if I heard the news...I wouldn't care. But if I cared enough, I'd just finish the god realms and change the way EotN grind works so you get to r8 in each rep by just playing through EotN once.

Open Source + One official server network? That just can't go together.

If they really released source for the servers it would cause lots and lots of private servers to spawn, with different mods, features, rules, updates.

I just can't imagine them loading a user made update to the official servers, ever. Even if they released the source, I'm sure they would want to keep official servers unchanged, for all those who would still play it, they as a company should present a product they can fully support. I can't see them supporting user made mods.

Another imaginable scenario - they could release only source for the client, not servers. But that would create the possibility of powerful user mods - 'hacks' that could grant players advantages in the competetive part of the game. I also can't see them doing it.

For maintaining the game's quality, security and fair competition, official servers and the client that would be able to connect to them should remain unaffected by the modifications. Modified clients and private servers would be a great thing, I can see the community come up with amazing stuff, but official servers should remain clean.

Brings back open battle.net Diablo 2... I'd say that within the first month, you'd see everyone with a modded client that:
-allowed the player to go to lvl 255 (or 65536), which everyone would have
-granted the player armor level 255 (or 65536)
-had all weapons do 255-255 damage, no attribute requirements, 100% sundering chance, +100% unconditional damage, +1000 HP,
-all players would wear FoW armour with chaos gloves, blindfolds and tormented swords and shields
-would automatically perform the rank 20 emote every 10 seconds
-would have all minipets out at all times

And then you'd have people admiring each other how they were Elite elite (the stuff happened right in front of me in Diablo 2. My first and only 5 minutes on open battle.net...)

Open source MMOs fail by default, they lack focus and end up having little of stuff that needs talent and re actually important (i.e. nice graphics design, intriguing quests, polished and handy gui) (see: planeshift which has at least redeeming quality of being furry roleplayer haven.).

I would give GWs source a look since i would love to see how it all works and maybe backport some nice new features to prophecies (comendations, challenge missions, heroes ...). And, of course, cut out some undesirable features.

The game can already be ran in opengl by making a shortcut to gw.exe with the flag -opengl. If you want to be real L337 you could always make your own wrapped calls of d3d to opengl or software modes. The same technique is used in Half-Life1/2 to achieve D3D/Opengl support depending on the main graphic API. The market place would be bleah to really implement into a game that old with the player base being so small by that point in time. The limit of minions would be stupidly easily to change literally just changing a single variable to whatever the highest entity limit of the engine in respect to other needed entities.

I should make this a bit clearer as to what I mean:

-Anet opens the game code and is a lot more lenient to adding new features made by the fanbase. A small group of staff work together on checking and verifying these new additions. The code for features has to be released under the GPL, meaning everyone gets a look to see if Joe coder hasn't tried to add a keylogger.

-People are free to make mods, make new games based on GW's engine but NOT its art (offline or on), but they have to host their own servers, and they have to release THEIR games under the GPL.

Start my own server for my wife and I so I could get away from everyone. Dreams - empty towns, no spamming, no kids pming looking for handouts, remove LS and any other anti-farming code they have, remove dying nightmares from the underworld, add a fourth type of weapons (orange inscribable), add orange weapons to all areas - only super rare, remove all blue, purple, and gold inscribable weapons, remove all gems from end dungeon chest, and balance all skills for PVE.
