computer without monitor display
king of killers
i am seeking some guidance because idk what to do with my comp... ok here is the story...
i moved to mississippi and we were staing with my brother so i decided to plug my tower into his monitor... it was working and then the monitor just turned off and stopped diplaying my desktop... the next day i tried it on my monitor it sounded like it was working correctly but not display on desktop... except for the data stuff in the begining and the windows loading screen then nothing.... now its doing the same thing over and over and im pissed... could this be the result of a virus that was long locked up?? because i've had a big troublemaker b4...
(btw i cant take it to geek squad they will see some illegal material like limewire and shit) so any suggestions hit me up... and if worst comes to worst just tell me how to format from the begining poll data and i will format it... though i really dont want to ...... plz dont leave immature comments....

if you see all the windows stuff but when it loads your personal stuff it blacks out that screams video drivers or card. Boot it in safe mode and try a system restore.

hmmmm a new video card again??? OH GOD..... tried safe mode same thing happens.... whats system restore
Covah
Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > system restore. It sets your computer back to an earlier date.
Also, since you hooked it up to another moniter it might have changed its display settings.

Safe mode still runs off your graphics card, just with basic VGA drivers - otherwise you'd be stuffed if you had a board with no onboard graphics, eh?
It's an odd problem - usually with a dud graphics card, the PC wouldn't get past the POST ("the data stuff"). Just as a trial though, try re-seating the graphics card. That means make sure it is pressed securely in its slot. If you transported it to your brother's house, it's quite possible it jot jolted loose - doesn't take much.
Might be an idea to take the card out totally and then replace it, just to be sure.

They don't have the right to search through your personal data.

When was the last time you ran a virus check? Like all p2p programs limewire got infested by tonnes of viruses a long time ago. From reading between the lines of the OP you haven't run one recently.
Enko
sounds like a overheat on the processor or the video card. how are your temps? try taking the side panel off and blowing a room fan into it. if it stops, its temps. if its not, then we'll have to figure what else it could be. repeated attempted bootups can either be overheating or a virus and possibly some other hardware things but lets rule out overheating first.

Yes take the video card out and blow the fan out clean computer as well it sounds like a video issue or a heat issue like was said before reseet the video card . I wouldnt worry about the geeksquad and your limewire they got bigger fish to fry than limewire users. It may be that the setting of the other monitor got it out of range of yours. Oh and downloading mp3's isnt illegal its the uploading thats illegal the sharing part is the trouble.

Your resolution on the other monitor was better than what your current monitor can do.
Boot into safe mode (F8 after the initial bios screen), and change the resolution from there, then reboot.

remove your graphic card and see if its still happening.
than you can see if its either your graphic card or just a virus

As Bront said, boot Windows into safe mode by pressing F8, and set your screen rez to something small like 1024x768 or the "native rez" of your monitor.

I had the same problem with a monitor on my backup pc, it turns out the cable was ancient (I'm talking like 8 years old) and it just didnt work any more. The problem I had was that when I turn on the pc, it works for like 15 seconds, then goes black. If I turn the screen off and then on again, it works for about 3 seconds. I just fixed the problem with a new cable.
Probably something else, but this is easy to check out, and it might work for ya

Limewire is not illegal - filesharing (of non-copyrighted files) is not illegal. Sharing copyrighted material is illegal, but making mp3s of the CD's you own, is legal. Geeksquad wouldn't know (or care) where your files came from. About the only thing you'd need to wipe off the computer would be anything that looks like kiddie porn. |
hopefully my creep of a ex-stepdad didnt look at any of that shit on my comp cuz thats why my mom divorced and robbed his a** lol. i will go try all this stuff

Too much information ><
(That must be the first time anyone's said that in the tech forum...)

Also check the pins on the Monitor plug make sure non are lose or totally broken off and in the card
I had a similar thing to what you are explaining a pin had broken and was only just touching sometimes to make the contact.
Worth a shot anyway other than that Resolution is wrong or bad card sorry

its not resolution, over heated card or any of that i think the vid card just gave out on me but anyway how much does geeksquad cost? i might go clear the hard drive of limewire and traces of it...... so how much do you think?

So it reaches the windows loading screen then goes black? Are you sure its not just windows failing to load.Try tapping f8 at startup and see if you can select last known good config. If you have a windows disc try booting from it and go to the recovery console and type "chkdsk" this might fix any boot error.
Pasha the Mighty
have you tried a new cable?
fusa
If its failing while loading windows its most likely an invalid resolution for the monitor. Try booting into safe mode or a monitor it works on. Then System->Run->Regedit
browse to HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> Video and change DefaultSettings.YResolution to 600 DefaultSettings.XResolution to 800 and DefaultSettings.BitsPerPel to 16 and DefaultSettings.VRefresh to 60
If you're not comfortable with what you're doing you can back up the registry by selecting the root subkey and export in file menu.
GeekSquad are very incompetent people to work with, and highly over priced. I tried once to have a cpu tested, the base cost of any work they do is $90 and up. Only person I know of that did have them service a laptop had the laptop returned to them completely unusable. Most smaller independent computer stores are more reliable and more knowledgeable staff.
