Powerless and frustrated...

Yes, what else can I say, I need a shoulder to cry on, that's why I came here!


I've been on this game since January 2006. I have to say GW is a great game, but since 7 or 8 months ago, I've being experience and horrible lag, rubber banding, network issue, constant gw.dat file corruption, fragmentation, ports, you name it, the thing is I can't play in peace.

I've tried all in my power, including contig.exe, constant client reinstall, port forwarding, connect direct to the modem, drivers update, modem reboots, and many other things, excluding contacting either my ISP or GW Support (back 6 months ago I spent days calling my ISP and finally I couldn't solve anything, ANET helps little, ISP blames ANET, ANET blames ISP).

Last Saturday and Sunday I lived moments of glory as I played normally, without lags, everything went back as it was until Monday. I can just play 4 hours / day as I get very busy all day, and I can't enjoy the game when I get home.

Some friends with same ISP doesn't have this issue, although have experienced it before, what is left to say? I hope GW2 works different, I simply hope it just work.

I jumped to WoW because of this, no lag at all, but got bored 2 months after and stop paying, and went back to GW.

In the mean time, I can only play other games I know, such as Gunbound, or just surfing the tube or Internet in general. My favourite game is unplayable.


EDIT: I forgot to say, that 3 months ago I built a new PC, main speks are Core 2 Quad, Radeon HD 3870, 4GB ram, 64-bits Windows Vista and 7,000RPM 250GB hard drive, and still have the same problem.

I don't have these issues. I think they revolve around your internet connection, your network, or your PC. You probably have automatic updates in the background downloading on those days and do not realize it.

My sister was constantly downloading crap, all day, and I had no idea. Turns out she had BOTH;

- MSN Messenger Sharing Folders on
- Spyware

Both of those leeched the internet connection something terrible. Turning off Sharing Folders + deleting Spyware fixed it.

It seems, if this weekend was lagless, you should look at what you did that weekend. Whether you did anything different to normal.

The situation as you describe it seems to be something outside your computer's hardware/software setup. A few things to investigate would be your router and external modem (since you say it isn't something with the ISP).

I'm not much up on specifics about network hardware problems with the GW client, but those seem like the two best places to look.

Edit: as phoenix said, also check if family members are abusing your network connection. A saturated up-stream line causes very bad lag. Malware and uncapped/excessive use of bittorrent can cause this.

Not to mention the steamy webcam conversations. D:

OP: Tried reformatting or something?

The first 2 things i would check;

If you have a firewall that can monitor which programs are making use of bandwidth, specifically uploading info, kill those programs and see if it changes anything. And if you're not running a firewall, i would recommend something like Zone Alarm.

And, if you're on wireless router, make sure its secure so no neighbors are stealing your bandwidth. (happens a lot) But if you connected directly to the modem, it's probably not this.

He said the problem stayed with him on his new computer, which should mean a whole new hardware environment and a clean OS install.

its quite possible that you have a signal strength issue to your house (i had a very similar problem due to this) this can be caused by anything from a loose connection to animals getting into your neighborhood switchbox.

my advice is to call up your ISP, and instead of asking for support, actually schdule a repair tech to come to your residence and examine the issue.

as for the constant repairing data archive error, i get that too... ive never been able to fix it, although i suspect the culprit is improper shutdown of the game and/or old OS install

1. Lag and rubberbanding is a network issue.

1a. Do some tracerts and post them if you need help interpreting them. Make sure to blank out your router's IP.

1b. Is your router wireless? If so, is it secured? Post if you need help securing it.

1c. Spyware, crapware, and P2P software are all known to suck bandwidth. Do you know if your system is clean? Post you msconfig startup tab's contents if you need help figuring them out.

2. Repeated corrupt data archive has 3 possible causes:

2a. Your connection is so bad that income data is being garbled when you try to download an update. The tracert should give us some clue on that.
OR
2b. Hard drive failure. Run scandisk.
OR
2c. RAM failure. Download, burn, and run Memtest86+

If you have spyware I reccommend you use SpybotSD (google it)

Welcome to the club.If you look back at other recent posts about lag you'll see the problems I've been having.You can do all the pings an tracerts you want but it won't show anything because it's just Guild Wars.This is the first time someones mentioned about Saturday and Sundays though because thats the only time i can play lag free

You know... again, I could play WITHOUT any trace of lag this Saturday and Sunday (during Random Arena double faction event). Hey, how odd can that be? I already started and issue with plaync support.

Today, Monday, lag is with me again, can't play.

Try OpenDNS, i've hooked a few people onto it and they all have experienced dramatically shorter delays when doing anything online. Standard dns servers from your ISP don't necessarily find the best route to your destination.

Also i noticed that you mentioned that you tried all the software solutions, but did you try replacing hardware? Your modem/router could be faulty or overheating, as silly it sounds my old one used to overheat and my connection was breaking up really often until i put it near a fan to constantly cool it down, thank god i got a new one now.
