i know in world of warcraft (as i used to play) there are many non-combat oriented pets, are there any in guild wars? if so, what kind?, and the oh-so-important question, where can i obtain them?

Well, he said non-combat pets so he obviously isn't talking about ranger ones.
There are minipets, which are purely decorative and probably the closest thing to what you're asking about. Most of them are obtained by having a character for a year (a real life, calender year) but some can be obtained through promotions and one can be obtained if you have every game and do a cross-campaign scavenger hunt. You can also buy them from other people for various amounts of cash.
