Obsidian Armor
Elfoe
Well, really, i think it may be worth of it, but of course it depends on what character.
I would only buy Obsidians for Ele, Monk and Necro.
And, what do you do with money in GW, if u have nice looking and perfect weapons? Nothing. Or, u can buy, for example, Zaishen keys, it's fun, but not really worth it.
Really, it's your choice, if u like the skin and gather money fast, then buy.

I think obsidian armour sets get a lot of stick because they look horrid on other people in towns because of the low textures. It can be somewhat off-putting.
Some of the lighting, reflections and detail are often only noticable when you wear the set yourself.
P.S. Please fix the butt of the female mesmer skirt.

It is worth it if you want it. After all it is a game, and if buying it will give you warm fuzzies, that is what it is all about eh? Personally, I havent bought any yet because none of the FoW sets really stand out for me. All of my level 20 characters have the best looking armours (imo) for their profession, and I am quite happy with that.

I look at armor....if I like it I see what I need to get it.....for the most part many of the armors out there are ok---easy to get and ok to look at, fow armor on the other hand, its ughly and very hard to get....so in the end NOT worth it....
crazybanshee
If you like it, get it.
None of us can tell you what you like. I got my female ele fow because its pretty much that or bikinis, and I just can't wrap my head around a bikini being armor.

I say get Obsidian armor if you like it - it's a rather big investment for most players, so be sure to like it... and not to impress others.
I got some sets, can take a really short time (farmed my paragon's in a week) or a long time (4 months to get my derv's set). Depends of the time you want to invest in it mostly.

If that's the armor you'd like to have for your character, go for it! Don't worry about what other people think, they're not the ones constantly looking at your character. If they are, then I'd be avoiding that other person like the plague!
For each of my characters (except mules), I looked over all of the armor available and picked what I liked best for them, whether it's 1.5k druids armor for my ranger, Vabbian for my Dervish, or a mixed set of glads armor for my Warrior, etc. And with each new set that's came out, I've checked them over to see if there's anything I liked better.

Yeah.I also like some of the EotN armour if it wasn't for ranks I would probably have gotten a set for my Ranger Norn perhaps. That includes my Ele I really like Norn on Eles.
ShadowsRequiem
Its pretty cheap today so IF you like it and have the money why not?
Plus the female monks armor makes stuff move around a lot....... like you're hiding some bowling balls in your bra >_>

My necro's FoW - hell yeah.
My monk's - waste of money simply because I stopped playing her.

Statwise I'd go for 1k armor..until they released Hall of Monuments there was no reason to get 15k armor whatsoever other than taste.
Obsidian armor doesn't have a special statue either and that is presumably more expensive than all the other armors.
That said, only get it if you (as a player) fall into one of these categories:
- don't need anything else weapon/skill/rune/insignia wise (you could get 15k or 5k or 10k armors and just spend it to max titles like sweet tooth, party animal, drunkard seeing how they are money sinks as well)
- have a lot of extra money to spend
- are infatuated with a particular set of Obsidian armor
- maxed out your gold
- do UW AND FOW on a regular basis and don't need to buy any ecto/shards for a set (it wouldn't be that much more expensive to you than the 15k armors in that case, though it is a loss since you could have sold them)
I do shake my head when people with Obsidian armor don't even bother getting the skills for their profession, have nonmax weapons and no runes, and put all their resources into their armor with the same stats as 1k armor.
JGaff
For my male mesmer - who is my main - farming for cash to convert into ecto/shard (and hey, Shiroken and friends paid ~20k an hour) was somewhat fun and rewarding. My advice would be to pursue FoW Armor if you you'd like to set a reasonably high bar for yourself (depending on your character and build, etc) and plan to get it on your main character (What's the point of grinding your ass off and never actually enjoying the eye candy!)
Two other thoughts do come to mind. Foremost, check out what parts of the Obsidian set are integral to the "look". You may be able to trim costs by forgoing gloves or the face if they clash with your taste or budget (Mesmer gloves tend to be a solid example - Warrior gloves not so much.) The other point is that the armor is an expression of your creativity; as such, if you can find a unique dye job to add to your toon, go for it. Personally, I use Full Male Mesmer (all 4 pieces, but bought in 3 separate trips) dyed black+silver with the EoTN monument eyepatch. It makes me look like a member of SPECTRE, but I do occasionally get a whisper in town with a comment about it (not usual, but I've recieved more than a few in 1500+ hours)
I should also mention that Marhan's Grotto American D1 usually has a number of players in Obsidian armor chilling around 7-10pm EST.
/that about covers it

Konig Des Todes
My personal opinion. Don't get ANY armor unless you like the looks or want to fill your HoM. And if it is for the HoM, then DON'T get Obsidian armor unless you like the look or have 'too much money' *as some people complain about -.-*

I got FoW just cuz I needed to spend money and add it to HoM. I personally never wear it as I think the monk one looks terrible.
The Red Messenger
I wouldn't get it until you have at least 20 maxed titles. This would ensure you:
a) dont need the $$ for something else, except maybe consumable titles or other high end items
b) are invested in that character, and have put in the time (so its not a waste)
c) you likely have decent farming skills (or know the market and can buy/resell), and can recoup the cash if you decide you didnt like it or change mains
oh i got obsidian armor and yes, i think it was worth it.

If you want to stand out and be different... go for Vabbian.

now lets see, Nice Armour> Obsidian...
Well I think being a main class of warrior, i'd prefer to buy the obsidian helm and that's it.
The rest of it's over-rated.

You can take your time and collect the mats for FOW, or you do what i did, burn yourself out farming for 6 weeks.

If you can afford it, why not? Get it if you like it, as long as it does not handicap you in the money aspect.
Pleikki
Yeah it depends. I've had hard work getting obsidian for nec and monk cause i like em but other characters got normal 15k cause they just look better.

Its vanity so the worth will be based on opinion. If you want it, get it. Just don't let its price and difficulty turn you into another one of those nobs who QQ about the market on a daily basis.
IMO the best looking and most uniqe armor is combo'd armor. I don't get why people think they always need to buy the full set.

I'm only going to get one set of FoW. For my Ritualist (male), and for the following reasons:
-I already have 15k armor on the rest of my gang, and nothing smart to spend the gold on, so it's the best thing to do with the money I'm getting while playing the game
-I don't like the other armor arts available to male rits
-just so I know that I did it
That's all...

If you really like the armor and how your character will look in it, then get it. Any other reason to get is by default, fail.

Definitely worth it. :P
