What are some of the most well-known PvE guilds? Is it even possible to judge which guilds more "well-known" than others?

Define 'well known?' Most guilds are only known about within a very limited aspect. For examples Guilds that are mentioned on here a lot are probably completley unknown on say German, Polish or even other fan forums. It's not being well known that counts, it's how much you contribute in a positive way IMHO.

there are a few 'famous guilds'
but tbh the more famous guilds are the ones that used to win halls all the time as people see their names constantly
[MATH] springs to mind ^^
they have reformed too and we will surely see much more of em

I think guilds that have be named Guild of the Week tend to be the most well known of the PvE guilds. Otherwise it's kind of hard to get notoriety.

I was in SMS for about 7 months, and if I didn't have a conflict with someone in the guild, I would still be there today. They are truely great people, and quite smart...
The things they can do in PvE is rediculous.

I think that this true for older guilds like ZoS/SMS.

Never heard of these guilds

On topic:

SMS, GR, Rare, ZoS, DVDF, LOD, SNOW, GoE, SoF come to mind.
There's large 700+ alliances like the Shinra (?) guild group, but I've only seen them advertising.
Guilds like Sins and any make themselves known by their control of towns. And at least in the past, it worked.

TAM's trying to make itself known; we get about an application a day

For a PvE guild to be well known, it has to be either:
1) Good/decent with some quality control (SMS, TAM)
2) Have a huge alliance but are on average bad (LaZy, XoO)
3) Hold towns, but are bad regardless (any, Sins)
4) Really old guilds (ZoS, SMS)

As you can see, it's usually size and age that make PvE guilds well-known. However, some guilds show that they can still do it through quality.

I personally think dR is the most well-known PvE guild. They are great PvErs and I'm fairly sure they are very well known. I mean like who doesn't know divine, god walking amongst mere mortals?

On a serious note, 3 that come to mind without really thinking would be SMS, DVDF, and LaZy. Back when running was popular, LBS were very well-known for their running reputation (great service, horrible price ).

Two "well-known" guilds that I've noticed purely through observation that stand out in a positive manner to me are SMS and DVDF.

Why these two guilds?

*The names of these guilds are known all over.

*They've contributed positively to the Guild Wars community on many occasions.

*You do not see their members doing stupid stuff in towns giving their guilds bad names.

Being "well-known" doesn't necessarily mean that a guild is of good quality. But with SMS and DVDF, from what I've seen, their reputation is positive, and for good reason.

Jaden MFing Stone got it before Divine did. Ergo, rawr is a better PvE guild than dR. :>

The only pve guild really deserving recognition for skill is SMS.

Your making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...I'm such a carebear....

OT:

DVDF: Community oriented..really nice folks.
TAM: Amazingly humorous bunch.
Rare: Gotta love live kareoke!!
LaZy:...You can swing a dead cat in an outpost, and hit one for crying out loud.
SMS: s-k-i-l-l-e-d.
GoE: They have pie!!!!

PvE guilds are well known for size and aggressive recruiting, rather than skill. LaZy has to be, by far, the largest and most aggressive recruiters, so they are the most well-known.

No comment on their quality, though.

I only know of guilds like SMS from these forums. I've never found anyone from the popular "Guru-Guilds" that stood out to me in game. I don't mean this in either a good or bad way, but I just haven't played with some of the folk or seen them in towns a whole lot

On the other hand, I can't bring myself to comment negatively on guilds because I think there's a unique positive aspect to each one, even if people outside that guild may disagree. I will say this though: I don't think all the "leet" players are in one guild, and I don't think all the scrubs hang around together, either. I caution against brand loyalty - there's so much out there.

SMS are the only real pve guild famous for being good at pve, and even then some are bad (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, ARKY :P)
DVDF are known for being carebear idiots who care about lore (AND CANT KILL MALLYX)
Sins are known for holding towns.

I really don't care of the who's who in Guild Wars. People getting all giddy about running into a "famous" guild is pathetic imo.

DVDF - Everyone knows them
SMS - Had never heard of them till i saw all their failed attempts on the fastest elite area's thread, but everyone else seems to have.
agro - Can't get away from them :P
SNOW, LaZy, GoE, CASH, few i always see floating about.

But which guilds you see depends on what you do.... I used to live in Toa and only saw GoE, CASH etc, now I live in deep and the only guild I've seen more than 3 from regularly is HKRO which i bet nobody has heard of.

Thats funny, b/c I wouldn't count not using UB failing.

Anyways...
DVDF - Hate to say this, not b/c of your pveing, but b/c you have what alliance full have DVDF tags, and the awesome job you guys do at events.

SMS - I beileve that we (Racthoh, Trub, and Rob + 5 heros) were the first to kill Mallyx without using the door glitch. I also enjoy the grab and go pveing.

KaiZ - Karlos created epic lulz on guru and his title "Master of Mallyx"

ask the same question on other fan forums or in game and you'll find that most people don't know GoE, TAM, LaZy, GR and the others mentioned here. DVDF and SMS may be questionable, but still not well-known.
If you're talking about well-known on GWG, then it's SMS & DVDF definitely.

I think most people do know LaZy. Especially if you ask in the more advanced levels of the game (not DoA and stuff, but just later in the storyline). They're pretty much all over the place.

SMS by a landslide. A guild that has Racthoh, Oreo and Rob is pure win. I'm sure I forget a few.

And Racthoh is the most famous pve player probably, by making those horrible UW farming guides in the past <3.
And of course, Lady Blue Steel made him/herself famous by naming a guild after him/herself.
It's hard to really stand out as a pve player though, hard for me to see.

The others I'm pondering about if I know them...
DVDF - is this one of the AB playing guilds? I heard the tag named several times before, but frankly I don't know them.
