What are some of the most well-known PvE guilds? Is it even possible to judge which guilds more "well-known" than others?

Not sure but I think there is no Renowned Guilds in GW^ ^.

Define 'well known?' Most guilds are only known about within a very limited aspect. For examples Guilds that are mentioned on here a lot are probably completley unknown on say German, Polish or even other fan forums. It's not being well known that counts, it's how much you contribute in a positive way IMHO.

there are a few 'famous guilds'
but tbh the more famous guilds are the ones that used to win halls all the time as people see their names constantly
[MATH] springs to mind ^^
they have reformed too and we will surely see much more of em

I think guilds that have be named Guild of the Week tend to be the most well known of the PvE guilds. Otherwise it's kind of hard to get notoriety.

I was in SMS for about 7 months, and if I didn't have a conflict with someone in the guild, I would still be there today. They are truely great people, and quite smart...
The things they can do in PvE is rediculous.

I think that this true for older guilds like ZoS/SMS.

Never heard of these guilds

On topic:

SMS, GR, Rare, ZoS, DVDF, LOD, SNOW, GoE, SoF come to mind.
There's large 700+ alliances like the Shinra (?) guild group, but I've only seen them advertising.
Guilds like Sins and any make themselves known by their control of towns. And at least in the past, it worked.

TAM's trying to make itself known; we get about an application a day

For a PvE guild to be well known, it has to be either:
1) Good/decent with some quality control (SMS, TAM)
2) Have a huge alliance but are on average bad (LaZy, XoO)
3) Hold towns, but are bad regardless (any, Sins)
4) Really old guilds (ZoS, SMS)

As you can see, it's usually size and age that make PvE guilds well-known. However, some guilds show that they can still do it through quality.

I personally think dR is the most well-known PvE guild. They are great PvErs and I'm fairly sure they are very well known. I mean like who doesn't know divine, god walking amongst mere mortals?

On a serious note, 3 that come to mind without really thinking would be SMS, DVDF, and LaZy. Back when running was popular, LBS were very well-known for their running reputation (great service, horrible price ).

Two "well-known" guilds that I've noticed purely through observation that stand out in a positive manner to me are SMS and DVDF.

Why these two guilds?

*The names of these guilds are known all over.

*They've contributed positively to the Guild Wars community on many occasions.

*You do not see their members doing stupid stuff in towns giving their guilds bad names.

Being "well-known" doesn't necessarily mean that a guild is of good quality. But with SMS and DVDF, from what I've seen, their reputation is positive, and for good reason.

Jaden MFing Stone got it before Divine did. Ergo, rawr is a better PvE guild than dR. :>

The only pve guild really deserving recognition for skill is SMS.

DVDF: Community oriented..really nice folks.
TAM: Amazingly humorous bunch.
Rare: Gotta love live kareoke!!
LaZy:...You can swing a dead cat in an outpost, and hit one for crying out loud.
SMS: s-k-i-l-l-e-d.
GoE: They have pie!!!!

PvE guilds are well known for size and aggressive recruiting, rather than skill. LaZy has to be, by far, the largest and most aggressive recruiters, so they are the most well-known.

No comment on their quality, though.
