Everyone gets the Eye of the North splash screen, even if they do not own it.
To get to Factions and Nightfall, take the appropriate quests in Lion's Arch.

you need to go to add account keys and add your NF and factions account keys, not just install them. After that go to Lions Arch and there will be a box that pops up on the screen telling you which quests to take.
Breakfast Mc Rit
Talk to Firstwatch Sergio (skill trainer) to get the quest to go to Factions, and Lionguard Figo (standing on one of the docks) to get the Nightfall port quest.

Make sure you add the keys to your existing account! DO NOT make new accounts

Yes I believe I did the same thing - I installed them but my prophecies characters couldn't access those worlds. Its because I didn't add the access keys to my existing account. Its on the first page that opens when you open GW. It is under your password box - like Lilith stated add them to an existing account, if you want your prophecies characters to be able to move into those worlds.

Oh boy, that may be a shame. You may have to break out your credit card things again from your wallet. I hope it was a trial key that you gave away or that you gave the keys to real life friends.
Shai Lee
You buy extra character slots from the online in-game store, so like Wirt said, hopefully those 'credit card things' you were talking about weren't the actual game keys (as opposed to trial keys). There should be an insert in the game boxes as to what to do.
Advice: Never give away/sell things until you know your merchandise is working the way it should or isn't damaged.
