I was wondering if some of you could help me out. I am planning on building a new desktop for my GF. She currently has a Dell laptop that is at least 5 years old, and the screen is broken so it needs to be hooked up to a monitor. (Not very usefull as a laptop)
Basically I am looking to spend around $300. She doesn't play games, so it doesn't need to be extravagant. I have snooped around on NewEgg and TD, and tried to stay around my budget with varying success. (This is only the second time that I will have built a PC, so by no means am I an expert, but I do know enough) I basically want to make sure that everything is compatable. (I should also probably mention that I don't need an OS or monitor)
Any help that you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

Try checking Dell or Dell outlet for deals. You may find something close to $300 including OS.
If you insist on building, do you live near a Fry's? They usually have pretty good budget motherboard+CPU combos. Maybe Microcenter has something similar, but I'm not sure.
PSU and Case: Antec NSK 1300 ($60)

Yes, I know it's microATX only and the PSU is only 300W, but it will run a budget computer easily. If you want a tower case, then get the Earthwatts 380W ($30 if subscribed to Newegg's mailing list).
RAM: 2GB Corsair ($40)

Mobo: something with integrated graphics and PCI-e for future expansion

($60, or whatever you find for less)
CPU: Sempron ($30), or pick up a dual-core for ~$60

Hard drive: don't know how much you need ($50-70)
DVD burner: $30
Should add up to around $300
