Hello. I'm not a big tech nerd and wondered if I could get some help here .

I want to be able to run Guild Wars in max settings and also run CoD4 in any settings really. I was going to buy the XFX 8800 GTS 320 MB Extreme Edition as I thought this would be able to meet both my needs but i'm not sure whether my computer could handle this video card. Is there any way I can find out?

Here is some information, not sure if this will help in any way .

Manufacturer :Compaq Presario 061
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Hard Drive: 320 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)

You're not going to be able to stick in a modern card with that system. The cpu will bottleneck, the psu probably won't be sufficient, and your current video card is agp, whereas any recent card will be pcie. The best way to upgrade would be an ati 3850 agp, it consumes less power and is agp.

Yes, that's my recommendation, but what mobo and power supply do you have? Make sure your power supply is sufficient.

If you could post the manufacturer/model here we could tell you. If you are unsure open up your case and post a picture of the labels on the side of the psu.

We don't know if it's a nice board or not.

*If* it's a nice board, like a nForce4, then take out the AMD 3500+, slap in the AMD FX-60 (or Opteron 185 if you can't find/afford FX-60), put a 8800 GTS 512 in there, and some 2GBs of Teem Xtreem PC3200's (400mhz). And you'll have a very capable machine.

But that's just wishful thinking right? The AMD 3500+ is a 939 chip, let's hope you have a nice board

Good, it is pci-e, meaning you can stick any modern graphics card in it, however power constraints may still be an issue (plz identify your power supply). My suggestion would be an 8800gs or 9600gt, both are low on power consumption. The old g80 chips (like the card mentioned in your OP) are massive power hogs.

If it's a Compaq it probably has a crappy power supply. Hopefully it's not some stupid proprietary design that can't be swapped out for a standard ATX.
