There was no storage tab for Onyx Gemstones and they dropped (rarely) before EotN was released.

Let's all think of something : why did they ever created clay brick and brick of mud ? to build something (because it'd be a little stupid to have a clay weapon or a muddy armor xD).

Maybe the guy found them or someone gave them to him. But right now, they are useless...
