*Spoilers may be in this entire post*
How many times have you watched the main NPC hero of a GW storyline die yet you feel nothing of his death and play on?
Rurik? His sacrifice for our passage? His battle against his friends?
Togo? His love for his brother and the students he had brought, with another sacrifice for the good of us all?
Kormir? (Although she lives at end, what about her dissapearance mid-game?) and her conversion to a god too?
What about, what I feel was intended, the sorrow of Jora having to kill her own brother? I was just happy about killing the blasted thing, I didn't even see any grief or further mention of her brother, maybe just norn.
The fact that people (well dwarves and asurans) were being slaughtered by the destroyers in GWEN?
How about that all 'sad' day when you saw ascalon destroyed? I thought that would have atleast been a touching moment, but actually, I just regreted the loss of a playable area.
The first moment I actually started to get attached to the characters was mostly in GWEN and the bonus pack.
What the bonus pack did, was actually get you more involved in those previous, good for nothing NPC's, it showed you their 'lives', how the worked, what they really were. You saw more of gwen's hardships and understood now theat great fight of nightfall.
You also see hatred in GWEN, as Gwen is inscreasingly forced to work with Charr, and also in turn you see the evil side of Charr as in the one (quite good) cut scene, Pyre puts an arrow through another Charr's throat after getting all he needed from him.
I feel that the main problem is, you are dumped with too many new things all most too soon, you have so many NPC's and plot lines flowing in at once, you have no time to understand the ones you begin with. I also never undertood my characters, did you? you're just dumped with a almost fully aged character that has no history at all.
I suppose for the sake of the replay factor of a MMO, it would be hard/annoyying to constantly go through all that stuff as you replay the game for like, the 4th time.
I do believe though, that it would be good to have more emoton and feeling involved in maybe GW2 and later expansions/series.
Thnx

P.S. I do realise that it might just be me and I could be heartless to a degree.
GW needs more emotion to it

I think it comes down to how much we hate Rurik, Togo and Kormir.
Rurik - Suicidal Rampage on Charr, very annoying in hard mode no doubt.
Togo - get stuck, dies a lot, a general retard.
Kormir - Does no work, and becomes a God.
In order for for us to get emotional over a characters death, we have to like them enough.

Kilroy anyone? ^^
In the end, you get used to it right? You start loving that lil ol dwarf for rushing into every room and dying, leaving you with a giant mob in HM.
Spoiler! And god I cried my eyes out when Gadd died!
But true, I didn't feel anything for the death of Rurik, Togo or Kormir. Maybe it's in the storytelling... I don't know.
On the one side, mostly you just want to continue gaming, instead of having to QQ about the death of some polygons. On the other side, the more you feel connected with your character/the world/the story, the more you will feel for the characters.
I won't wine about it though. Hope they will correct the storytelling mistakes in GW2.

I felt quite shocked that Rurik died before he could get his people to Kryta. He defied his king in order to save his people and his penalty was death.
Togo, the voice acting was so horrible and flat on that, it was like watching an anime done excellent in Japanese turned to a 90% censored and chopped apart American cartoon with voice actors who just don't care. And Danika.... You really can't get involved in a story that is told horribly with worse voice acting. Shiro could have been so much better.
Nightfall and Kormir, well it was fun. Heroes who actually talk with you in your story. Swords displayed that you give them. You expected Kormir to die, but the whole transcendance to a god?
Prophecies was the only decent story out of the four. Eye of the North was FAR too short story wise and didn't wrap up the things we really wanted to know. Instead of answering our questions, it instead gave us more. But the Prince of Persia and Brain have to be the best voice actors they ever had.

It depends on the char. Some of them I liked and didnt want to see die. Togo/Rurik were not one of them. I refuse to lead in the mission where rurik dies because I dont want to see my char run and say "RURIK NOOO!" cause I would be yelling "Give him another you little demon midget?"
But when I thought Gwen died in the searing that bothered me. I like her random babble and following me around. So I think it was how attached we were to the chars in general.

That being said, it's still a video game. It can never have the same dynamics of a book or movie, no matter how good the storyline is.
Really though, how deeply you get pulled into it (level of emotion) is entirely up to you.
Actually I thought the scene where the undead Rurik is laying there (undying?
) and telling us to stop the Lich was quite touching.
Sure he may have been a little annoying at times, but he did it all 'for the good of his people'; and in the end, that's still all he cared about as well.
For Tyria!!!

What exactly is your suggestion anyway? Add emotion? Seems kind of broad. |
I would suppose it focus's more on storyline and how your character progress's with everyone around you.
I do also realize that one is not compelled in anyway to feel anything in most games as a person is only focusing on completion.
What I'm taking a shot at here in my suggestion is, mabe give people more history so you just know them, not just those 2 cents every time a hero joins you or a short monologue by the person as you discover them. This is most probably drawing the game in too much detail and pulling attention away from major storylines or other game features.
I would feel a bit more 'attached' to a NPC that was fighting with me when I knew actually who they were.

I think they tried to show in the EotN story how the people at A-Net felt about Kevin Gadd leaving the team. (Just what I make up out of the story, no proof of that anywhere)
But as I said before, you just play the game to play the game, not to cry your eyes out. Though I wouldn't mind to get more close to NPC's.
I do feel a lot of love for Vekk (Gadd dying), Gwen (the whole Charr thingy) and Tahlkora (being rejected by Koss) which results in me taking them along more then other heroes.
O
I've had a couple of aww moments in GW, which is more than I can say for any other games (other than ff7, 9, 10, and x-2).
I think they almost over-used the "killing your leader" bit. Rurik dies. Togo dies. Kormir kinda dies-ish. Gadd dies. It got to the point where I was expecting it.
I think the game does a fine job of drawing you into it, for an mmorpg. I know I got choked up at the searing, and to this day there's a few mission cutscenes I refuse to skip because I like them.
