Hmm. might be a bug? I don't recall that happening to me. Were they the last group? If not, go kill something. Or go kill a tameable pet or something, that might register as the last thing. Otherwise, it's a bug, sucks but you'll have to do the area again.

i know there is a bug in 1 of the ascalon areas where this can happen, but its the first ive heard of it in talus. sounds similar.

Don't they eventual come back in their patrols?

If they walked off and disappeared, if you kill whatevers left or a tamable animal, that might count as vanquished. If they walked past the portal to a point where you couldn't reach them, then you're screwed. It's just a game error really, there isn't much to it.
