Because Anet doesn't think it's much of a priority to spend the time and effort putting in these fancy portals with shader effects into previous campaigns.

You mean the visual effect of the portals in Nightfall? I think the old ones look fine. Infact I myself prefer the old ones. I never liked the new ones that much. But I'm only speaking for myself on that preference.

Personal preferences aside, why did they create new portals for Nightfall in the first place? Was there something wrong with the previous ones? If they thought there was, theo should have updated Tyrian and Canthan ones...

I myself like these portals, however, as RavenGT explained it would take to much time to exchange the portals and it would be unnecessary because how many times do you go into a portal and think of how it looks. I know i don't i think about what's on the other side of that portal.

Simply because Old Tyria (as I call it) and Cantha are older. I honestly couldn't care less about the portals tbh.

Now, seriously. They should use the 'sun' type of portal in light areas where the other one would not be seen correctly, like snow, desert, etc.
And the 'whirlpool' type when the area is dark, like the Undercity, Torment, darkest dungeons, etc...

Those fancy portals have post-processing effects and my graphics card decided to break in that area so I rather not have them cause i see blocks.

I prefer the prophecies portals. NF and EotN portals are so in-your-face that they it's hard to suspend disbelief.

TBH, I prefer old ones as old portals look more subtle and not out of place like new ones do. Whole game is in instances, its not like we need huge visual clue like in wow.

edit: in fact i know they were, the -dx8 tag was around back when the game launched, and actually does stuff in Prophecies/Factions, such as reduce the quality of a lot of stuff so...

But at the end of the day, who cares, I think it's normal and acceptable for the fact that the newer content has better visuals.

Nightfall and EotN use more and new shaders.
The best way to check it is fire.
In Prophecies, all fires look almost the same regardless of the setting in Shaders and post-processing.
Turn those two on and off several times in EoTN in front of a fire, and you'll see that it changes radically.
