Lagging Lagging Lagging, Im not laughing!

I'm have windows xp.
Ive had the pc for 1 year and had it upgraded by my next door neighbour (computer technician) with one of the newest grafix cards there is and have had the pc completely wiped of viruses. So why am i having lag! I have Avg antivirus and spy-bot (SAD). I have a mentaly high ping though and hardly any per second. I have to admit my pc isn't the best but i specialise in P.v.p and it takes so long to move and load. I can't give you any more details on my pc because i don't get those things. What can i do, i struggle to get to lvl 3 as it takes me so long to do things! Please help me... Gw is unplayable because of this and i enjoy it so much!

ok what type of connection do you have? dial-up,DSL,cable, ECT?
Right click on my computer and select properties, on the page that opens under computer post what is there.
Have you defragmented your harddrive?
we need as much info about your computer as possible. make and model# would also help. Do you have a graphics card?if so what kind?

well i will try re-instaling gw when i can but i don't no if that will work, and my pc so slow i dont wonna risk downloading sumut which may contain a virus!
Eye ball
actually i have just thought of something i would like to ask you all, I had been getting something called "low virtual memory" in the bottom right hand side of my desk top, it said windows were instaling extra virtual memory for me. I had this for months and there was no change and when my pc was cleared of viruses it went. the other day my dad was logged in with limewire on and i was logged in too with gw on.com The warning came back. What is virtual memory and what should i do?
snaek
wut r ur pc specs?
try runnin gw at the very lowest detail settings, if ur not doin so already
the most sure-fire way to see performance increase would most likely be to reformat ur harddrive
it sounds like the prob is so many little things that'll be slowing it down
the main 2 probably being:
- a lot of (useless) proccess running in the background
- heavily fragmented hard drive
edit: it can also be an overheating prob as well
when u post ur system specs, also list teh core/cpu/gfx temps

It sounds like you have a pretty low-end computer... what CPU and Graphics card do you have?

I've been lagging only at the beginning of the first battle I get into. After that, it becomes normal. This, and only this, is when I lag.
Eye ball
Well sometimes Gw is nice too me and only lags on the first battle, saying that though i get atk lag and i for somewierd reason have full energy until i suddenly freze and then i get these msgs saying i dont have enough energy and am dead on the floor, so it is rare that i can get onto the next match!!!

Do you know what internet connection you have? The main cause of ingame lag is down to an internet problem. Although you haven't provided the full system specs yet, like how much memory do you have installed.

KK, well im gunna have to try and find those things, but i am quite upset about my grafix card, he said it was really good and it would run Guildwars with no problems!
I think i might aswell stop playing guildwars for a couple of years till im aloud to get a laptop!
How much does it cost to build your own gaming computer that will last around 1-2 years, i think i might aswell make my own one and buy the parts seperatly, not having to ask my dad for £300 - £400 for a laptop.
I'm not too sure what i should do though, i love guildwars and at the moment i have mario kart to play on but what happens when i complete it! It will be winter so there goes my trampoline.
I gunna ask my dad if i can totaly clean up the pc myself, de frag it and clean the discs. I'm gunna miss guildwars though if it doesn't work!

Update your drivers and install SP3.

you didn't post how much RAM your system has. that alone can dictate how well it performs.
it looks like your computer is running out of RAM all the time, which accounts for the slow performance.

We have a few of your system specs but
How much ram are you running what kind of ram
what kind of internet connection do you use.
If you have less then a 512 stick of RAM Which is what windows XP recomends you use as the minimum for only XP I think. It will cause system lag and the virtual memory problem.
which means you want at least 1gig.
If you use Dial up........hmmm just do not use it.

I recently reinstalled gw and i wanted to see how bad it was not having the .dat defraged. i loaded the guild hall fine took 2 steps and froze for over a minute. So I suggest you defrag your hard drive MORE than 1 time in a row. When I ran XP I would defrag the hard drive over and over untill it would
a) tell me that it did not need to be or could not be further defragmented.
b) the green progress bar would flash to 100% in about 2 seconds.
I defraged MULTIPLE times and know im back playing with no problems.
for testing purposes please set all options>graphics in guild wars to low/fastest.

You can look at a quick overview of how fast each graphics cards are here... http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/g...-v1-6,581.html
I don't like tomshardware.com but their charts are nice

It's always best to make your own rig, provided you've done enough research.
The Tech Report has a make your own system article if you are interested and it'll give you a lot of info behind system building. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14610

You're looking at about a thousand pounds for a gaming computer that'll last a couple of years. A quarter of that should probably go on the graphics card.
A 3-400 pound laptop won't be worth the boxes it arrives in for gaming purposes.

Maybe it IS an FX5500, Mani?
A reasonable card back in 2004, not so hot now. Just saw one on Amazon going for £27 (technically ~$54, but more likely around $40 the way trans-Atlantic technology price differences go)

Not like your gonna play Crysis with it though. works fine with GW. The FX5500 is nothing really but a FX5200 thats been OC'd. Like I said Ive been using it for a long time with no problems using it to do 3d modeling and having 3-4 3d programs running at the same time. Just to show the dinosaur this compy is since its my backup.
Been going strong for the last 4 yrs lol
Lyssa Apate
Just to confirm: the Geforce FX5200 runs Guild Wars fine, though you have to lower your settings if you want smooth play.
Eye ball
kk, well i just played it omn the lowest graphics you can and it's even worse, it was so slow it took me 3 minutes to get the little slider bar back up to the right!
Eye ball
oh and i only play Guildwars, it the only game that i have ever played on my pc. I just don't understand whats wrong with my pc, could tehre be parts that are broken in my pc?
Eye ball
lol, just found the ram!
I got 448MB of ram.
I hope thats good.
If it isn't is there a thing i can plug into my pc to give me lots of RAM, if so where can i get one and for how much? (btw i live in england so i use £'s)

From what I read on your System Specs, you are running 2 CPUs. Are these single or dual core? Second: the GFX5200 was a good card, but you are running 2 processors at 3.0ghz each; have you tried forcing to a CPU/core? I came across an issue with the 5200 and dual-core where you need to force GW.exe in taskmgr.

That is just under the recomended mininium for running windows XP.
Just try to find out what kind of ram you use is is SD,DDR,DDR200,DDr400 etc etc.
what brand of ram? and how many ram sticks are in the computer.
448 is a odd number
Ram normaly comes in 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 or 1 gig etc.
that number seems like you have mixed ram sizes like a 256 with a 128 and a 64 or something crazy like that. This is something that will cause computer problems you should not mix different ram sizes (Ex: a 512 card mixed with a 256 to make 768) it does cause system conflicts.
hope this helps, if you want to give a little more info that would help us help you.

Just go to Crucial's UK site - http://crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/...aspx?Agree=Yes.
That will scan your PC, tell you what memory will fit it, then tell you prices. It's good.
[Side note to the rest of you - I've always sworn by the Crucial widget, but now I try it, it bluescreens my system with good ol' "IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL". Think it just doesn't like 64bit?]
Fried Tech
low virtual memory is a RAM problem.
get more RAM of the same type that is in your comp (if a 256mb stick is your largest I would suggest getting another 256, or just get a 1gb stick, and take the others out. I have had problems with putting different sized RAM sticks in my computer before, even if they were the same brand, manufacturer, and type)
and why do you list a 3.0 processor twice. a computer that old will not have a dual core 3.0 processor (virtual processor maybe?)
and finally. DONT TRUST YOUR NEIGHBOR!

Everyone here is telling you your hardware is bad. That rig, old as it may be, should be able to play guild wars. It may not run it on max but it should run it.
I will put up an ecto that if you thoroughly defrag the hard drive you will be able to play. Why are you still reading this? Go and DEFRAG YOUR HARD DRIVE.

Kk everyone, i will ask my dad if i can re-fragment my pc, but it might take hours. If i am going too change my ram i hope it doesn't cost too much and if i do will it be hard too change it. My pc cost us £1,200. If i am gunna do all this i need step-by-step instructions. And yeh i did mean to put that thing twice!

So, let me get this straight. One year ago you paid £1200 for a computer with a Pentium4, had a worse card than a FX5200 and just 448MB of RAM?
Whoever sold you that needs locking up. Whatever you do, don't go anywhere near them when you decide to upgrade.
