So..What does Regina actually do?

So it's coming up to Regina's first month of GW.
Now I understand that she's had a lot of work to get into, and I imagine it's hard starting a new job and being thrown into the deep end head first.

But what does she actually do?

Looking at the dev tracker, she appears to post on here and other guild wars websites randomly at best, and even when she does post, they're rarely reaching more than 40 characters.

I also know she answers he talk page, but the last response was on the 24th of April.

So how can we call her our new community relations manager, when she hardly interacts with the community. Fair enough she might play GW on her hidden characters, but there's been no report to my knowledge, of her actually appearing in game.

So Regina, what have you been doing for the last month?
And will we ever actually see you in game? or actually even a regular poster on the GW official sites?

Soon, I Shall Have New Clothes - 02 May 2008

Spent some more time leveling up my newbie Mesmer today and chatting (via Whisper) to players whilst I quested. A player I was chatting to was kind enough to donate some crafting materials towards acquiring my Pre-Searing Collector Armor. I'm on my way! Trying to decide what Secondary Profession to take. Considering Monk. Any opinions?

'Playing' at Work - 01 May 2008

I spent a couple of hours in Pre-Searing Ascalon City (Europe, English District 1) today, chatting to players and doing quests. I'm going to do quests, level the character up, and leave Pre-Searing the usual way because I think it would be a little odd to see a Level 3 Mesmer running about in starter armor. Once this character gets out of Pre-Searing, perhaps I'll jump all over the map and do quests randomly. Maybe I'll get her a decent set of clothes soon enough.
Give her time, she's trying to get her Mesmer over to LA most likely.
If you see her along the way, offer a helping hand.

My point is, she isn't interacting with the community in the game except in secret. Atleast Gaile popped into the Int dis's every now and again to give us a few updates or to start conga lines.

Never seen her on the forums or ingame, any member of a community team needs to interact with its community members. So far Reggy has failed at doing this and perhaps instead of leveling her Mesmer (seriously, wtf a mesmer?) she could be informing us about things to look forward to. Assuming there is something nice to look forward to in GW other than the grind....oh the grind XD!

That's because she's more straightforward than Gaile and doesn't post as many nonsense and random blabla as Gaile.

She just posted today, again.

She has a character in game, she's still setting it up.

Getting her ingame account set up, talking and responding to players, and some other stuff too probably.

I know, shocking.

Once she gets to LA, you can then probably expect a more public appearance.

Guild Wars

I have been playing Guild Wars since 2005. My main character on my personal account is a Tyrian Necromancer/Mesmer. I have two more heavily used alts, a Canthan Warrior/Mesmer (typically) and an Elonian Paragon/Warrior. I have a Pre-Searing Mesmer that I'm trying to get to 20, but that's a back burner project for now. I have various other characters that are used for storage or have been abandoned due to time constraints or because I decided I didn't like their appearance after all (but I didn't want to delete them). Although my main character is a Necromancer primary, my favorite Profession is the Mesmer, followed by Necromancer.

Sorry? She's been playing for longer than Galie, and longer than alot of players and she's still setting up her mesmer? She already has max characters which can get to the main areas.

The bold is the key part, she wouldn't use her personal account for work, so she probably has a brand new account with nothing in it and probably doesn't want to transfer stuff from her personal to her work account.

Kind of what i was thinking, but even then it takes me about 2 weeks at the very most to get to LA from Pre-Searing if i play a few hours a day. But what i'm more shocked about is that Reggy has started a Mesmer....a sodding Mesmer of all classes, i think i lost some respect for her. Yup...there it goes...lost.

She is actually watching this thread right now , and of the mesmer thing, she stands for the mesmer as one of the few users. Maybe mesmers get some buffs for PvE with the new skill balance things

Ok admittedly, I agree with this part, however, that still doesnt explain the lack of community engagement we get from our current single community relations manager for the whole game..

Gaile Grey's Gaile Grey character is a character she took from Pre to LA, and stuff. Regina has to do the same. GM account =/= personal account.

I don't use my eight other Guild Wars characters, which live on a personal account, for work purposes. So while I am technically able to travel wherever I wanted if I used my personal account, I prefer not to use those characters for work.

I play my work account while I'm at work. I'm actually pretty busy at work, so I haven't had as much time to play as I wanted, though I did spend several hours last week talking to players in-game.

We (meaning myself and the rest of the community team -- I'm not actually the lone GW CM) do read the forums daily or as near daily as we can, depending on our workload. Just because we aren't posting doesn't mean we aren't reading. And just because you don't see me online on the forums doesn't mean I don't visit. I could just be visiting at different times to you. I respond to posts that I think require my attention.

I don't play "in secret" -- I'm not actually sure what was meant by "in secret" since I use my real name as my work character's name. I've been answering all whispers directed towards me when I am online.

I agree.

Not on Guru, lol. Give her a chance please, how many of you people jump right in at a job you are new to and are expected to perform at a high level. If that were the case many wouldn't hold their jobs too long.

Simply put, Regina is much more quiet than Gaile. I have seen her visiting many threads in the forum, but she rarely posts in those threads. That doesn't mean that she isn't relaying our thoughts and suggestions to the A-Net team.

Personally, I think there is much more risk for a community relations liason to post in response to threads (since their posts will be dissected word for word and oftentimes twisted) than to simply tell people that they've read the comments and that they are communicating to the team.

A quick suggestion to Regina - you might want to pop in every once in a while and let us know if you've read and communicated certain topics to the A-Net team. That doesn't mean that you need to tell us what your opinion is on it...it just lets the community know that you're listening.

Have crossed over to Post-Searing. Am at Level 6 -- lower than the level at which I traditionally leave Pre-Searing (which is Level 8 or so) because I didn't do all the quests, but oh well. Chose Monk as Secondary Profession. I wish I had a couple hours of the work day to devote to playing this character, but I do not. It'll be a little while longer before I can reach Lion's Arch properly -- without teleporting by using GM commands, that is. I hope people understand that I do not wish to use my personal account for talking to players online.

Thinking out loud... Am unsure if I am going to be holding Q&A sessions in-game.

From a player perspective, they don't seem to be the most efficient means of gathering information, as with a little bit of effort you could find the same information you need online, and on your own time -- without relying on someone to spot your question amongst the rows and rows of text scrolling rapidly in the chat window. The chats tend to be extremely chaotic and difficult to follow, making for a less than ideal user experience, particularly with the spamming and inappropriate comments and language. Players also feel ignored if they don't get answers to their questions, which only increases the desire to spam, which further contributes to the chaos. I can certainly say that when, as a player, I was present for Gaile Gray's online meet and greets, I was really turned off by the obnoxiousness of a large number of players towards Gaile and towards each other. So much so that it negatively impacted my enjoyment of the chat and I didn't even want to be in the same district with these disruptive people, even though I had a keen interest in the actual content of the chat itself.

From a community manager perspective, they reach a very small number of people in real-time and rely on members of the community being in the game at the same time to disseminate the information outside the game. My login times are unpredictable, though I suppose one option would be to schedule an in-game "office hour". Compiling screenshots of the chat is labor intensive for members of the community, though I am aware that many take pride in being at the right place and time to discover and post these chat logs in the first place. Furthermore, it's extremely unlikely that I would discuss information that isn't already available (or soon to be available) elsewhere.

What I've been doing currently, that is talking to people individually, while it is a little busy on my end, doesn't result in player aggravation from their voices not being heard. It doesn't result in aggravation on my end in terms of offensive and problematic language and not being able to keep up because 30 people are asking a question -- in public -- all at once and expect an answer immediately -- in public. People seem to be more likely to spam chat and be disruptive in public because everyone is watching and some people like that kind of attention. However, the same efficiency and reach issues are still present.

Does anyone have thoughts or opinons on this? Pros? Cons?

Apparently people are interested in what community managers do, besides read forums. So, this is what I'm working on this week, and following that are some everyday sort of duties. This isn't an exhaustive list, but it will give you a general idea of what I do Monday - Friday, between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00. I expect there will be some additions and/or changes as time passes and when new demands require it.

This Week:

* Reviewing resumes for the next Community Management position at ArenaNet. Yes, we're hiring another Community Manager. If you're interested in applying, check out the job advert. I've also been responding to questions about the position from some interested professional contacts.
* Researching contact management systems to manage public-facing email addresses so that the global community team can coordinate effectively.
* Editing an article for posting on the Guild Wars web site.
* Planning for PAX 2008. I'm brainstorming what sort of events that ArenaNet will have at the convention.
* Working with IT to get email addresses correctly configured so I'm getting everything I need to.
* Learning to use some new organizational technology that we have recently deployed to help us manage work across continents. This is specifically with regard to working the European teams in web, marketing, and community.

Regular Stuff:

* Reading the forums and taking notes on issues and suggestions.
* Keeping up-to-date on gaming news and information, specifically the online gaming industry.
* Reading and digesting loads of email messages that come my way. I get cc-ed on a lot of messages so that I'm informed of what is going on in various departments.
* Replying to a host of emails sent to the fansite@ and community@ email addresses.
* Regular communication, via email and messenger, with the rest of the community team about game issues.
* Meetings. I typically have at least four regularly scheduled meetings per week, though this may increase. More meetings will typically get scheduled as issues arise. The scheduled meetings are generally an hour long. There are also a ton of ad hoc meetings, which happen when folks just stop by my desk or if they ask me to drop by their offices. For example, someone from QA may stop by to let me know about a big bug they are working on, or I may be asked by one of the designers to stop by and give my input about something they are considering.

I hope that gives you all a bit more insight into what my day is like. If you want more of this or if it's too much information, let me know.
