2. The area's outside of the town are instanced, meaning your team gets your own copy of the map (but they are huge)

3. PvP is the number one feature

4. It may be a little higher, but most comps can handle it if you turn down the settings

5. instaling the games takes a little while, but patches after that are quick and easy

6. the max is 20, which is easy to get (this makes it so you can have multiple max level characters, and so teh game isn't all about leveling, but it's abouot skill)

1. No comment
2. No, whole game is instanced but you can meet people in citys.
3. Yes, Random arena, Team arena, Guild vs guild, Heroes ascent and Alliance battles and hero battle.
4. Just install both.
5. Not too big.
6. 20, but it doesn't matter.
7. Generally, you will follow storyline but you can get runs from other people to skip certain things.

Guild Wars is instanced, meaning you walk out of a town and it's you and your party. In a city, it's you and everyone else.

There is PvP, a lot of it infact. You can make a PvP only character as well (which is probably one of the better ways to start PvP).

Max level is 20.

You progress through the game by Missions, this is the storyline. You can do side quests or just explore, but it's easiest to get to some areas by doing the missions rather than trying to fight through several areas. As you're a beginner, I'd suggest against getting a run anywhere.

Also, here are the wikis:
Official Wiki
Unofficial Wiki
These contain a lot of answers to your questions.

just so you know as it is mostly a very big mistake of newcomers

once you are lvl 20 the game isn't over yet
for a very long time not

you've still got tons of quests to do/repeatable elite missions
underworld FoW
mini games
aliance battles
GvG
farming
title grinding
and so on

just don't think you'll be finished once you've maxed your lvl

say you're finished once you've done all 3 campaigns vanquished, all titles, all quests, all skills

then you can say you're finished with gw
not before^_^

anyway you will have fun with it trust me

Patching GW took me 5-6 hours last time I reinstalled. This was over wireless though @ 300kbs, so a hardwired connection with decent connection should do it in 3-4 hours.

Best way to get this info is spend an hour or two browsing the forums.

3-4 Hours with a "decent connection"? The longest I've ever downloaded was like 45 seconds MAYBE!

Sir Owns Alot EP, Malice probably means using the -image command after a fresh install.
Which will take that amount of time, and quite possible longer then that.
(also depending on what you install (AKa, prophecies) then you'll have to download 120k files just for getting the title screen, on a slow network that can already take 2 hours.)

45 seconds to d/l 4-5GB..I want your connection

To d/l the whole game using -image will take 3+ hours.

You should be thankful the GW client is so small. AoC client is 13gb, not including any patches.

Most people start the download and let it run while they are sleeping or out of the house. Less anxiety that way.

You can do the whole thing (3gb) using -image command (see Commands in the wiki) which will cover all three campaigns & extras (although you can only access parts for which you own an access key).

You can download basic client and do small updates as you move through the campaign you have. Each new area will require an update to your gw.dat file.

Well, if the op is going to install from the platinum edition dvd then the update download won't be that big and long, that dvd should have most upto date data at the time of release anyway.

From reading his post though, he seems to think that GW is a free WOW. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong but he'll be really disappoint with the game if he start playing with normal mmo mind set.

If you're installing from CDs, it'll be around 200ish megabytes to get into the game, then 20ish megabytes for the first big city, then couple of megs for each new area. Expect a 700-1000 megabytes the first month (assuming 100hours/month play, and assuming your activity patters are not too different from mine), then 300-400 megs/month afterwards - total bandwidth, for both the game and the updates. Add ventrilo/teamspeak to this number if you want to use them.

If you're downloading everything, I'm not sure how much you'll have to add to that number (as CDs have most of the graphics resources on them).

If you're a little confused on which campaign to buy, there's a guide right on the Q&A section. But if you're totally new at the game and you want to probably take it slower, than Prophecies is your best choice. It's got a great learning curve as well.

so should i install prophecies first, and later Eye of the north?

As much as I hate to say this, install Nightfall first. Getting the heroes will make your time in GW much easier. If you install Chapter1 first you'll end up playing by yourself most the time.

You'll be soloing the quests but you can use the henchmen. For missions, I've always been able to find other ppl to group with. If you're lucky, you can even find ppl for quests.

Platinum contains both Prophecies as Eye of the North.
2 The world is big, however you get your own copy of the map.
3 Yes there is. Short-timed PvP and long-timed PvP.
4 I had 512 MB RAM until a few months ago. Prophecies worked well but EotN didn't because it needed 1 GB. The loading was slow and there was approx. 30 seconds black screen after a cinematic, made me do the first EotN quest fail.
6 Max. level is 20, it sounds low, but it actually is just enough, the foes still increase in level (up to 30) so there still is some challange.
7 There is a storyline. Actually it is the point to follow it and you will also get involved with it. However, on prophecies you can skip this storyline most of the time, only in the beginning and on certain other places you have to participate in it. In EotN there also is but after you accepted several quests, you will be able to move freely. In factions and Nightfall however, you are somehow forced to follow it.

EotN is an expansion, this means you have to owe a campaign first. Meaning: you have to install prophecies first and later on EotN (Which you can access with your Prophecies characters only after you reach a specific destination if you only buy platinum).
The heroes don't matter. Henchmen are also very handy. I bought prophecies some years ago and completed it with henchmen and sometimes other players only. Heroes make it more easy then henchmen, but look on the bright side, you'll get heroes with EotN as well, and very soon indeed. So when it gets heavy you still have the heroes to aid you out.

I would disagree. True, heroes are very powerful but to be powerful they need to be outfitted with skills. A brand new player won't have a wide enough selection of skills unlocked for their heroes, and for the most part the skills on offer at the hero skill trainers are less than impressive, so at the beginning a hero doesn't offer any real tactical advantage over a henchman's static skill set. The only advantage that heroes would have at that point is the ability to flag them independently, which you don't really need to do for PvE.

Starting with Prophecies is a good idea, because Prophecies offers a huge range of extremely useful skills as free rewards for doing quests. It allows new players to build up the selection of skills that they have unlocked without much effort, so that when Nightfall is added the heroes can be outfitted with much more effective builds much more easily.

In the beginning there was only prophecies, and almost everyone made it to the end of the game without any heroes. I completely agree with Toutatis for the part that these heroes need to be equipped, which is very hard in the beginning without any good skills. After various quests these skills will come and then it is no longer a problem.

Eye of the North is an expansion to the campaigns, so you don't start characters there, but can get one up to that point once it is created.

I just started an Elementalist and went with Monk as 2nd for the healing and rez in my group. I'm hoping I do well.

Roleplaying characters can PvP (PvP characters, though, have no access to PvE). I think you find an Arena after you are out of the starting area, but I'm not to that point yet, either.

Yes.

In this game you have a main profession, and a secondary.

The idea of the secondary profession is to the boost the effectiveness of your primary.

Mesmer and Monk are generally the most popular secondary professions because Monk offers viable self heals, and Mesmer offers decent energy management.

It's a Primary quest you're given, which allows you to choose one of the profession available in your campaign (which isn't your original profession). You can later change by either getting a quest (Prophecies) or going to a profession changer (NF and Factions).

Generally it's best to focus on one element and put the rest in Energy Storage and/or a supporting attribute. For example you could be an Air elementalist with some Earth to provide wards. Or a Water elementalist with some Fire so you can use [[Glyph of Immolation] with [[Steam]. Other people just max out Fire and Energy Storage.

The only mesmer skills you should think about using are in Inspiration or No Attribute (like [[Arcane Echo]). You probably shouldn't bother with Mesmer skills at such a low level anyway.

You can reorganise your attribute points whenever you're in a town so don't be afraid to invest them.
