Update - Tuesday, May 13, 2008
NoXiFy
they finally banned everyone with more than 10 stacks of armbrace???
Witchblade
dont tell me they are fixing something in CTC and letting those accs being stolen
HawkofStorms
Except Regina just said it isn't (or at least, not to that specific thread's hacker). Hmm... curious. What else could it be? Virus attack on a.net itself? Another dupe?
Thizzle
That would be awesome if you could still dupe ambraces.
Blackhearted
If the exploit has been fixed, as the update has claimed, why can't it be said what it pertained to? I mean, if it's as "fixed" as they say then it shouldn't matter too much since it couldn't be done now anyway, right?
SerenitySilverstar
QQing about being banned about to happen annnny second now.

if its something they cannot tell us, there are 3 plausable explanations (unless you can think of another)
1) they only rolled a temporary fix until they can find something more permanent, until then it is still something nasty that has potential to be broken
2) they cant tell us by law e.g. data protection act. if it clearly refers to the people who have posted here about being hacked then they might not be able to tell us? ok that one doesnt seem as likely because they could just not name-names but i cant think of another reason.
3) the nature of the exploit is embarrasing in that it could cause a severe lack of confidence, e.g it had some implications with billing or account information (e.g. anet themselves breaching data protection act by some loophole allowing people to get our information). This is the exact reason banks and financial institutes do not report the vast majority of fraud incidents.
either way i hope it is fixed soon
and i bet $10 a certain p*blo was involved

*runs to bathroom*
must have been a serious bug, they patched and made it live as fast as they could instead of the usual thursday update schedule.
might still be a problem if they didnt tell us what it was

Mesmer in Need
God, could they say this any more vaguely?
"We did something that may have some possible importance to you maybe, this had to do with some stuff with some people. More details some time later."

Stop flaming regina, she just does her job.

It's quite obvious!! The 117 bribed Devona and Aidan with stacks of armbraces in exchange for access to the game, via a back door @ grand central transfer chamber. There was a secret room there where they duped phantasmal tonics!! Devona and Aidan have been perma banned. Cynn is on probation.

If someone above her told her she can't tell, than she cant tell. She is new at A.Net and does not want to risk her job. It's completely understandable.

how anti-climatic...

Least they said something, took them hours just to tell us it was a exploit.
Give it a day or so more details might come out

Lovely i just went to log into my game and it says i cant. Issue 045 which is a ban, says account issues... wtf? Ive dont nothing wrong (like literally ever lol) so i wonder if it has to do with this?
dread pirate fargus
@super strokey
when was the last time you logged in?
eif you truthfully did nothing wrong then account issues could mean:
a) you were the victim of an attempted hack and they put your account on hold to minimize damage done (contact support)
b) you have performed some kind of a chargeback (contact support)
c) someone tried brute forcing your password and anet finally implemented a max amount of incorrect entries (doubtful) (contact support)
d) you were identified as a 'possible' wrongdoer and your account is on hold while they check your chat logs and trade logs etc. (contact support)
in any case contact support is the only thing to do.
sorry to hear about it :S

There are too many players out there who get a kick out of making life difficult for Anet and the community through exploiting for whatever selfish reasons. The less info and the tighter the leash; the better.

Wonder why it is that we can't be told about this exploit, unless it's not properly fixed so can be repeated, or was something REALLY embarrassing for Anet.

that should say attempted to log in

1) You could dupe easier and faster than before
2) You can still do the exploit with a little work, and they're trying to fix that
3) You could do like....some dev command and ban someone, anywhere, or log them out of their account and log into it to take things.

I would love to know if ppl are trying to get into my account and how they are trying to do so.If anet fixes the prob then theres no point they should say what was going on. |
In fact, by Anet keeping silent on information as to what an "account theft" exploit was, I'm even more secure. This means that those who would want to continue to do harm to the community and our accounts have nothing to go on in regards to information.
If this fix was actually in regards to accounts being hacked the only people who should have such information are the victims of such attacks. Such information should be obtain and discussed only in private through their support.
I understand what you're trying to say and believe me my curiousity bell is ringing, but there's just a lot of risk involved in releasing any sort of info on what an exploit was, especially if it involved account theft. With the recent threads popping up about hacked accounts, the less information on how it's been done, means less information for more cruel people out there to act upon.
Those looking to cause harm only need the smallest bits of information to find a starting point and we're all better off if "those" people have no idea what to look for.

By the way, off-track for a second, I still feel the first GH exploit that allowed mapping anywhere, led to finding the DoA exploit. The methods were very similar.
In the end all I'm saying is if I get my home broken into, or it's been attempted, I don't want to let the public know how I fixed the weak point. I'll stick my security sign on my lawn to say "It's fixed" and that's it. Giving anything more gives the crooks something to look for.
I hope all this sort of clarifies why I have the position I do in regards to spilling info on exploits in update notes.
garethporlest18
I would rather know the details of the exploit so I could take my own security into my hands because I do not trust Anet or NCSoft to do it the right way because they never have.

Thanks for reminding me. I just checked, and my post-items in pre- are still in tact, so it wasn't likely an exploit regarding post-pre stuff.

Edit: -Sonata- telling us what they fixed is better then leaving us to our wild speculation. Whatever happened, we will speculate and assume the worst possible scenario. Better to tell us, then to leave people nervious about their network security/the integrity of the game.
