Other publishers have decided to drop out of the show include NCSoft, the publisher of games such as the Guild Wars series...
[Please move if this isn't in the right section, but i didn't see anywhere else to put it ^^]
Just read this, and realised that NCSoft isn't participating in E3 2008 therefore not even a slight glimps into GW2 or even the beta!

Ive been looking around forums trying to piece together what little information i could find about GW2 with hardly any avail.
Im not sure what NCSoft are trying to achieve by hiding alot of information. Theres a very subtle balance between hiding information to create hype and antipication, and losing dedicated fans of GW1 because of it - some even migrating to other mmorpgs

I respect their right for invitation only alpha testers, but i hope the beta testing is not only available to everyone that preorders GW2 but lives up to the hype they've created for themselves.

A topic like that has been writen awhile ago and we discussed on how bad it is for NCsoft and not rushing to do the demo will be for our and their best.

Yep, E3 was about generating hype through the community. Those in power decided that it should be a meeting of game makers and I guess a "select" few to spread the word. Trying to make us rely on G4 makes me hate this even more, print media & gametrailers ftw.

E3 decided to become an invite only event and the price to purchase space actually went up. Considering that E3 was used by developers to get ordinary people interested and excited in their products rather than just showcasing their future titles, its no surprise E3 is a dead con.

My impatience, let me show you it.

GTA IV was first announced in November 2004. It took over two years for a teaser and screenies to be available.

It only looks like vaporware if you have an unreasonable view of software development timelines.

Realistically, I think PAX is the earliest con where we can see any decent new info about GW2.

May be that Arena Net has some very unique and ground breaking features for GWII and wants to hit the ground running, fully committed. Release things to early and Blizzard, Funcom, Mythic, etc will just poach the ideas for inclusion into their own, new (soon to be released) Pay-to-Play MMOs.

Well PAX is about 3 months away. I'll be suprised if they show or tell us anything before then.

Agreed, it was probably too early for anet to show anything related to GW2 in E3. I still believe (?hope) we will see the beta as announced in the second half of 08.

E3 is no longer an open event. A lot of companies aren't participating anymore. And even if they WERE at E3, we wouldn't get to see any new info because it is a closed event now.
Not surprised, nor do I really care.

Please hold yer horses, ANet'll show stuff about GW2 when they want or are ready to.

That said, can't say I'm really bummed about pulling from E3. It's actually a pretty good idea.

Next year Games Convention is dead, too. The name stays in Leipzig and the exposition goes to Cologne.

I also like that Blizzard is holding a press conference the same time as E3 _in a different place_. That is a big f u if I ever saw one.

Hard to beat the Blizz dragon. Regarding having it on the same date: I admit that's pretty funny, but it would be interesting to see if the show-up was greater than E3's. Now *that* would be quite a slap to the face.

I believe Activision is doing the same.
Edit - Duh, that's in the article. What was I thinking?

E3 shot themselves in the foot. Who in the world thought that taking the best E3 has to offer (public accessibility and sheer size/variety) OUT of the formula was a good idea?
And how does having a smaller, crappy E3 with INCREASED prices help the smaller, independent game developers?

In any case, I'm not surprised NCSoft is pulling out. Doesn't really sound like an ideal use of marketing funds to me, either.

Good job Mercury Angel, i gave up on posting after seeing that.

E3 thought they were the SH*# of gamming propaganda, thinking their name was already enought to make companies fight for a space on their show.
As we can see... they were totally wrong.
We can only watch if they will really rule (eventually) with their cocky atitude or they will fall and hit their faces on the ground.

You assume that they intended to remain an accessible and relevant gaming convention. I think the intent was to become a business expo geared more toward industry insider networking.

Thankfully, they failed.

Um, since no one has mentioned this...

E3 was never NOT invite-only.

E3 for Everyone was a public event, but those were separate.

E3 has always been a press and special invite event, but in recent years has gotten so overblown that it collapsed and is now in a minimalistic mode. Anyone who has followed the actual progress of the E3 (rather than just the announcements) would have seen this coming. Its dying because it ended up too big for its own good. It became less about the gaming industry and more about "booth babes", big production booths, private parties, and the such. It was chaos. But never, other than the E3E events, was it open-invite.

NCSoft not going this year is not surprising to stay on topic. E3 is a dying horse, and unfortunately the chaotic events don't appeal to the common developer anymore. Hell even EA and T2 don't like them anymore due to their ridiculousness.

Oh, that's right. I'd forgotten about the "for everyone" part.

And I guess I remember E3 more fondly from the previews of Prophecies, Factions, and GW:EN. (Don't remember if they previewed Nightfall publicly at E3. I do know it was shown privately in 06 "Also making an appearance will be the next chapter in ArenaNet's Guild Wars franchise, though it will only be shown behind closed doors.")

Nostalgia does distort memories, after all.
