It's not that I don't understand the concept, It's that you're logic is flawed in so many ways. (again, it's probably those prebuescent hormones) For starters, people rarely kill enemies or open chests for these rare items, they pay other people for them, like splurging for a make-over. Which of course all goes to equiping their character for the E-peen race, which you could directly call a beauty contest.

Considering Anet prides themselves in having a skill > time/equipment based game, the "upgrades" you're talking about don't actualy exist. A 125g collector sword has exactly the same stats and functionality as your 100k+XXXe req9 crystalline/eternal blade.
People don't buy these armors and weapons to "upgrade" anything but their outward apearance, and because GW offers no high level reward aside from cosmetic changes and apparel.
