NOD32 - just the AV or the firewall too?
Snograt
AVG 8 is about to expire, and I've been swayed by you guy's recommendation of ESet's program.
Now, NOD32 alone is £40 for a 2-year license, whereas the security suite (same with firewall and anti-spam) is £60.
IS THE FIREWALL A NECESSITY?
I've been in a recent discussion that told me a good router that stealths its ports precludes use of a software firewall. Should I go cheap? Or should I go belt-and-braces?
As usual, double £ to get $

No experience with NOD32, but a software firewall is useful for monitoring outbound traffic from your software. It's probably not a necessity if you have a router. I chose cheap, and still use free antivirus/firewall software.
legendary_Ace
Well, I guess you won't need a firewall with a VERY good router firewall.
But most likely I wouldn't take any chances, I use "COMODO" It's a great firewall, but can be annoying for the first few times of running stuff.

Yeah Firewall is recommed. I use Firewall +60-70e/2month AV

Using NOD32 (AV only) and Comodo Firewall. Never tried NOD32's firewall since I'm unwilling to switch from something that already works for me.

All you need Snog
On the router yeah there firewalls are somewhat good and if you back it up with an AV you dont really have to worry like Rahja does or be as paranoid as others are.
Snograt
Thanks, Mani - yeah, I know. I have this odd habit of paying for stuff when I really don't need to. Possibly subconsciously making up for all the pirated crap I've used in the past
The forth fly
had Nod32 for a while i got a nasty virus with it got rid of it and went back to AVG and haven't got another 1 since its ok but not perfect

My boyfriend has NOD32 and I find it's incessant popups annoying. I swear by AVG personally. ANd.....Nod32 blocks Guild Wars. You have to turn in off to play.
Snograt
Hmph. Now I'm getting put off NOD32. /sigh
fusa
I've been using Nod32 and their firewall with no problems playing Guild Wars. It uses the least amount of resources of any AV I've tried. I tried Avast before this but had to disable it while playing GW else it would slow my computer down too much to play. AVG also seemed to use a lot of resources. McAfee and Norton are horrible.

/edit all you have to do is allow GW. then it's not blocked.
and yes I promote nod32/eset smart security, however I turn the anti-spam off. if you're using FF, it's not needed.

I agree that NOD32 is annoying to no end. I tested a trial in a VM and it was constantly popping up alerts about this that and the other.
I've used Norton (due to it being a trial preinstalled) and hated it, used to use McAfee many years ago, tried AVG and didn't care for it due to how hidden some things felt, but have always been happy with avast (when I used av, I quit using antivirus over three years ago).

Ok Tarun, I'll bite - considering you're somewhat of a PC security guru, WHY don't you use AV?
I know it's going to involve not downloading shit, but how do you manage to stay threat-free with no AV?

D'oh - of course. Every time he gets infected, he just hops in the TARDIS and goes back a few minutes. Silly me
Admael
NOD32 never talks to me unless I talk to it first.
The only popups I get is when the files are updated.
I don't like the Firewall that NOD32 offers, I'd stick to Comodo, hell not having one is better than NOD32's firewall.

Comodo free, or the $39 a year nonsense?
Abedeus
Same as Admael. And when for example Avast used to update, the popup would screw up my games (because my mouse tries to be in the game AND in the windows screen - hai deaths in Crysis, Gears of War and Quake Wars). Nod is barely visible when it updates, because it doesn't shout at me ,,AVAST HAS BEEN UPDATED!!! NOW CLICK ME OR SUFFEEEEEER!!!11''. Oh and it fades fast, so you won't notice him. And he doesn't screw up games.
Btw, if you set your firewall really bad, you won't even be able to connect to Internet. Happened once to my dad.

Heh, I'm very familiar with 192.168.0.1 - running wireless to an XBox 360, a Wii and a PS3. WPA PSK encrypted and allows whitelisted devices only. Unlike all the other cretins in my apartment block, all of who's routers I can see, all with default names and all with either no encryption or WEP.
Yes, I've firewalled myself out of the internet before now

Nod32 is an EXCELLENT AV, but I wouldn't spend extra for the 'Internet Security' Package. The AV really doesn't have any conflicts with any program I've run (from Guild Wars to Halo to the randomly downloaded productivity App that gets deleted just as quickly) and (from what I've read) has blown the competition away in terms of detection in recent years (not sure how it stacks up most recently). The AV already does alot of stuff that the internet security does (minus the firewall) so you're really just paying extra for a firewall that isn't neccesarily phenomenal.
Your router should be more then enough security for day to day stuff, but if you just really want to be sure about your security or want to see what is accessing the internet from your computer, then you need to install a software firewall. I'd also suggest Comodo Firewall Pro as it is completely free and works wonderfully. One suggestion though, I would NOT use the +defense option when you are installing, as the pop-ups will drive you insane and it WILL interfer with safe programs. The vanilla Comodo firewall + your router's firewall will be more then enough to keep you safe.

Right - that's enough NOD votes to convince me, and Comodo thrown in sounds wise.
Thanks for all the opinions, guys and gals.

theres no reason to not use free security software
unless u have some serious private data that needs professional-like security protection
or ur constantly puttin urself in a position to be vulnerable to get hacked/get a virus/etc

The main reason on my NOD32 choice is its low footprint. I hate AVs that hog resources - Norton may be a trusted company worldwide, but their product eats resources, it's very intrusive and it's a total bitch to remove.
AVG free is ok, but still too pop-uppy and resource hoggy.
I've heard nothing but good about NOD.
Oh, and the final straw from AVG - every boot I'm getting a "renew NOW!" requester - telling me I only have 60 days left.
F'k 'em.

NOD32 is not very friendly, does no hand-holding, won't talk to you unless you talk to it, and still protects you automatically from all major threats. -- Exactly what we all need in an Antivirus. It will do you proud
Tarun
Avast can be very easily configured to silently update.
