Waste of time playing Guild Wars?

This isn't what you what you think it is. Have you ever be told that you are wasting your time playing Guild Wars when you can be doing something more constructive. It's ironic that most times the person that asks you that question thinks nothing about spending hours watching television and often falling asleep while doing so. My reply to those people is that it keeps my mind active(it does take some mental ability to play). I can socially interact with people in the game(the television never replies). I find the fantasy world of Guild Wars much more entertaining than some mindless sitcom. What would your reply be to such a question?

My reply? Ask what isn't a waste of time then. And put that answer down.

But then again, we all know that there is better use of our time rather than spending it on games. Well, maybe a little is ok. But when you type /age, you can start calculating what one can achieve with that amount of time.

if I'm feeling sarcastic then i use "why do you waste your time sticking your nose into other people lives"

if not, then i usually just explain that playing an MMO doesnt mean I have no life.

Well I would reply that yes it's a waste of time just like all entertainment time is really a waste of time when one could be being productive for their sake, their familys sake or their countries sake. But, we as human beings have become lazy in this time frame of our existance. There was a time when you had to spend every waking hour of each day just to survive. So, yeah it's pretty easy to say one is wasting their time compared to past times when there wasn't much time for entertainment.

My mum always tells me to get a hobby. For her a hobby would be doing some form of craft project. I always just reply that this is my hobby, and just as valid as any other type of hobby. She can't really say too much against me since i'm active, i exercise regularly, and never reject my family for games and i generally look after myself. Still, it's interesting to see what people consider 'valid' hobbies.

Best way to put it.

Although I dont play excessively and never have done, so no one has a problem with it because if an chance to go out and do soming or hang out with my mates comes up I wouldnt hesitate to drop gw for that, it's just a game for having fun on anyway

It's your free time, you can do whatever you want with it.
Unless you sacrifice your school/job/love for gaming, then it's prolly not the best thing to do.

Subjectivelly, it IS waste of time. Just like reading, biking, talking to friends, having obscure hobby...

MMOs are a bit more unhealthy (both mentally and physically) thou. Maybe you can claim that you are doing it as extreme sport ... after all, play MMO obsessively for couple of years and you will be risking heart attack everytime you log in.

kinda sad but if someone asked me why id prolly just reply with a simple 'why not' isnt really a good answer for that :3

just tell them that everything in life is a waste of time, since we are all born into waiting to die. (emo answer)

not my answer, if someone can't understand my gaming, since I have been doing it for @30 years now, I really don't care.

I have young kids and I usually reply... I could be out at the Bars drinking with friends or worse. When I play GW I can watch the kids use my brain a little have a little entertainment on the way. And after the intial setup fees it is free to play as I will..

I work around 10 hours a day. When I come home I'm too tired for a "real" hobby. I just wanna relax and have a bit of fun.
Should I be working out instead? WTF do you do with a 500lb squat anyway?
Walk around the neighboorhood and try to move mini coopers?

My mother has said that to me a couple of times (before she RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed off to Spain)

I simply said: "Ok mum il go out to town this weekend, like all the other people and get drunk, sleep with a few men and come home pregnant (like a lot of girls) . Which would you rather...me playing a game or raising a screaming kid in the house?"

If it is someone else, i usually say because i have fun, and if you are having fun then you are not waisting your own time.

Of course Guild Wars is a waste of time, it's a game. Same with WoW, Poker, Chess, DnD, and movies.

You must be from the 1920's, or a trailer.

I've defended videogaming many times to those who believe their lives are more "substantial". To be honest no single person spends their entire life as a social butterfly partying every night and meeting new people. Why is that the "right" way to live a life anyways? And if thats not the case, what else can one do. Go to the movies, see a play, rent some nature equipment and go on an excursion- on a daily basis it all costs money, so unless you're rich I doubt one can live that lavishly.

Of course going to the local billiards hall on a Saturday night is always fun though. I for one however do not believe in defending videogames by saying "Oh I guess I'll go get drunk like everyone else my age, get a girl pregnant, wind up in the hospital after drunk driving." because only reckless people pull that shit.

Well, being an adult, I can do whatever the hell I want, whenever the hell I want, for however the hell long I want. it's all me. and it doesn't just pertain to gaming. that goes for life. ;D

@OP, if it's your elders ragging on you, ask them if they'd rather you develop a nice <insert drug/alcohol> addiction. now that is constructive.

/edit LOL at your age: 59.

you should know these things by now. no one CAN or SHOULD even be able to criticize you.

Depends on who's asking...

My parents: Either "As long as it only casual, I don't see the problem" or "Ok, ok, I'll mow the lawn, just give me 5 minutes".

My friends: The universal "At least I'm not playing WoW" (again, I know).

People I barely know: "Everthing I do is a waste of time".

People I wish I didn't know: Either "STFU" or half a pound of this with this stuck alight into it (if I've been to the lab recently).

- That's makes a good question. Would you rather be trained in something like archery, developing skill that lasts for the rest of your life, or spend your time pimping up virtual character in a virtual world that doesn't exist in five years? Oh how many players have I met who are past the 'fun' and closer to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Release a new title and these nutcases are quick to crawl from their lairs.

Not always a waste of time. As I have just started my college classes torwards a degree in game design and programming.

I would tell them then they don't have to do it and they can go have fun watching reruns of dumb tv shows from the 70s

Well, what would you use archery for?

In terms of learning actual "skills" or something productive, I'm doing that *and* playing games. I gots tha time.

What if...
...I'm so into GW I never go out so no one has a chance to ask that...

JKing, althought I do play like 3-6 hours everyday.
But then again I have a lot of free time; my grades dont suffer, all As, and I run and excercise, and when it comes to parents of course they bug me, then again that's what perents do.

All in all as long as you don't over do it then by all means use you time as you wish.

Indeed, should the Middle Ages roll around again you'll be in hot demand.

However, should that fail to happen, however unlikely that seems, your now well-developed skills at archery are about as much use to you as knowing the true power in Guild Wars is mending.

And as for the original question, I wouldn't bother to grace such an inane question with a reply.

Yeah, i'm gonna have to quote you on that. It is both rather true, in at least someone's context, hahaha, or in the very least rather comical.

I have had people tell me to stop playing video games, and get out and do stuff like certification exams, and better jobs, etc. I tell them that this is what I do, this is the life I have chosen for my self, and i'd ask that they respect it as I respect their lives.
