My favorite heroes to bring are (in order)
Necromancers (versatility)
Paragons (just a little bit behind)
Ritualists
I don't think I've used any other heroes for a long time. Maybe a Ranger for BHA or something but that's it

I usually take Ogden-heal/prot, Olias-MM or Minion Bomber, and either a Paragon-dmg/support or Gwen-full interrupt. Some areas I drop Ogden and take Vekk - Air Magic instead - really it depends on the area.
Honestly, except for the absolute most difficult areas, the standard team works fine as long as you advance through the area correctly. I define "standard team" as - 1 mele, 1 MM, 2 eles, 2 monks(or equivalent), myself (mele), 1 variable - usually a Ranger or Paragon. For areas with zero exploitable corpses - I substitute a Illusion Mes, or an additional healer. Again, it depends on the area.
