I've tried searching around the net, but besides the basic description in the wiki and the basic descriptions that walkthroughs for NF provide I can't find any general information on heroes (such as what are all the heroes there are/how to get them, general information on hero skills, etc.)
is there anything that compiles all this general information or should I just keep browsing through the wiki?

That's most of the information on heroes.
As for "Hero Skills," they are actually PvE skills that only actual players can use, your heroes can use any other skills in the game.
For a list of skills that heroes can't use:

Huh? Mind adding grammar?
Anyway, I think it means that heroes don't have the intelligence to use complicated builds so you should give them something relatively simple. Builds that are based on spamming stuff work well, like Sab's N/Rt healer, MM's in general, etc.

They are good interrupters too... lightning reflexes!
Too bad they don't know what's got interrupt priority...
Just try out some builds and see how your heroes react in certain situations.

As a matter of fact I am working on such a guide just now, Not sure when it'll be finished, but my aim was to collate as much information that we know about heroes into one place, and try and keep it up to date as skills change. I doubt it will be a place for builds, since we already have a pretty nice sticky with some great builds in it.
DGalt
yea, i'm not as concerned about specific builds - more just how the whole hero system works in terms of acquiring them, basic descriptions of each hero, etc.

The first chart on the heroes page tells you where to get every hero.
