This is a tread to attempt to keep the rest on track. Stop from being Hijacked. Or generally derailed. It needs to be computer oriented so please keep that in mind. It seems that "we the techies" seem to solve others issue and just have fun at the end of the tread, talking about what we are interested in. So here is an official spot to discuss computer related random topics that we can just let it roll. Please no flaming (we are pretty good about not doing that).

"We the techies" consist of like four people I respect here. What you are doing right now is undermining a good thing as is. I haven't experienced any problems for a long time in this section of the forum.

In short, I do as I please. *wink wink*

Same as The Way Out. Doesn't seem like any of the threads here are hijacked with ill intent. Same goes for the general discussion following a solution.

This isn't a flame, so please don't take it as me trying to. Just noting my observations.

I hope I'm one of the ones The Way Out respects. Please oh please, let it be me.

Lol.

Indubitably. The rest of the forum is nublets like me, trying to learn from the wise ones, and a succession of fly-by-nights looking for a quick fix.

What I like about you if that you are active here, you are open to help, and you listen. There are way too many people here that don't know anything other than what they own and a couple things they have learned. It is the nature of some people to act as though they are experts with systems, even though they don't really know anything.

I am a firm believer in the general nature of forums and how it allows a community to grow together and share information. We naturally attempt to weed out the negative losers and fake know-it-alls. The people that don't quite fit in attempt to flame and barrage others to gain their 2 seconds of fame here, not realizing that they never will.

In the meantime, I tend to stick around this section because we don't have UB arguments and PvP vs PvE arguments here. Plus, Rahja and Quaker both hide out here and they are both knowledgeable.

And if you know a lot, don't rub it other people's faces.

Especially since someone else will more than likely show up and pwn you and your "knowledge."

don't laugh, i have a PC in my basement (or at least used to) that had those things.

i know there's one "review" out there that claims these cards run faster than a geforce 9800GX2. personally, i don't believe that's true. it might perform on par with the geforce though.

i've always had the opinion that the technology that went into the 8800GT was actually meant for the 9800 series. however, nvidia purposely released a stripped-down version prior to the launch of the HD3800 series, just to spoil the launch. after all, why would nvidia base so many of their current cards on the same technology?

in hindsight, it's easy to see that had nvidia not introduced the 8800GT, the HD3800 series would've been extremely competitive. nvidia essentially morgaged part of the future to remain competitive. they are kinda paying the price right now, but no really.

Aye, I like the tech forum because it is the only part of Guru that interests me, and I've learned a butt load of computer information from other people here the past few months. And lots of neat tricks and tips that I'd otherwise never know.

Rahja has some pretty neat information too - I just can't always absorb the bigger picture of it, gets pretty complicated.

Another reason I like this section is because it barely needs any moderating - since everyone usually keeps themselves under control, aside from our opinions now and then doesn't hurt anyone though. And the people who post in here seem pretty nice and decent as well.

Well, to go along with the gfx card talk, did anyone see this on Engadget?

It looks like a really cool idea. And it would totally change how I play games, especially on my laptop.

If it doesn't cost $1000 that is.

Link to ASUS site is here: http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=11426

Bah.. I was just messing with my fan controller, hot-plugged it into the other system and heard ''click'' then a BSOD with some long stop code followed, rofl.

Bad idea. But I've been hotplugging it in this system with no problems, oh well.. maybe I shouldn't be doing any of this.

What I don't understand, is that the ATI cards pack a lot of stream processors and high core clocks too, what exactly makes Nvidia out-perform them? Even without GDDR4 etc?

I always use Nvidia as you know, because they've been reliable and problem free for me, I just wonder why this is, because on paper it seems ATI does have decent cards spec wise.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I have tried to find the answer before. Basicly, it USE to be that the drivers that ATI supplied, were thought by most reviewers. to greatly limited thier performance. Then Nvidia started doing the same thing with unoptimized drivers (versions 98 and up). Junk drivers and all, nvidia have still done the trick for me.
I just wish I could go back to the 93 series of drivers. Nicly optimized, fully compilied and small compaired to what they are putting out now. It worked without a bunch of junk hanging out in the system memory.

Edited - Reminder to self; never reply to a post when my blood suger is too high or too low.

ati cards mainly suffer from a lack of ROPs (raster operators) and TMUs (texture something or another, can't remember). anyways, both of them determine how quickly textures can be drawn on screen.

the HD3800 series has 16 of each. the geforce 8800GT has around 56.

now don't quote me on exact specs, but that's the answer.
