u start with dunkoro(monk), koss(warrior), thalkora(monk) and meloni(dervish) when u enter or soon after, there is also a quest on the starter iland, in the docks, to gain either acolyte souske(ele) or acolyte jin(ranger)

There are some really good heros in EoTN also...Jora, Hayda, Ogden...ect. Dont forget them!
Crom The Pale
If you have GWEN you get 2 heros just for starting that adventure and a third at the second town you reach. You can earn 2 more heros in the very next city you come across.
In very short order you could have a Monk, Elementalist, Mesmer, Dervish and Ritualist with very little effort. Though you will need some skills unlocked to make the most of any Hero.

Basically all you get from playing through the camp bar Olias, Zenami, the Acolytes, Magrid/Master.

The heroes are easy to get, it is getting all the skills for your various heroes that I find difficult and time consuming. Especially because I do not want to play 5 different characters only to obtain all the elites and standard skills for each class.

I know you said you didn't want to bother with nightfall, but it does have one nice advantage. Hero Points to buy certain skills go a long way in saving gold. Also, if the skill is already unlocked on your account, but not your character, you can (usually) get a tome for cheaper than the 1k it costs for the skill (saves your skill points, to)
