I just got a freaking 72 hour ban for having an unacceptable name. I'll list here all 12 character names i have on my account, LET'S SEE IF WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE IS FOR SOME UNGODLY REASON "OFFENSIVE", shall we?!

...The only thing i can even remotely relate to this is "Explicit Sadist". There's no way that's considered offensive? How would that even offend anyone? I wouldn't want to offend anyone... There is NOOOOO WAAAAAAAY that many carebears reported my Elementalist from the mere 30 minutes i afk'd in Eye of the North yesterday.

Lol! Sorry to hear of your troubles... I don't find any of those names offensive. Though I suppose any name with "Explicit" in it it insured to get 100% more attention from people. Also, it might be just me, but it seems like Anet has stepped it up a notch recently with bans... the other day a friend of mine was banned for 72 hours for spamming /dance in the guild hall... there was a little party going on and apparently he lost control...

So, no. They, whoever is giving the temp bans, are not very good at this. But at least people who do have bad names are getting what they deserve. That'd be the only solace one could get from this, though.

Hmm i didn't think of the Nihilist one. Just in the everyday-usage pop-culture reference, i didn't think Nihilist to be that big a deal. The dictionary definition makes it sound totally evil, haha. Although that is a PvP character going on a year, i'd rather that be the name in offense than Explicit Sadist. Explicit is my 2 year old ele, and her name is one of my favorites. I'd have no problem deleting the PvP, i don't really need another whiptail anyways.
Either way i'm still not going to continue playing this game and subject myself to completely random, nonsensical, and unjust bans at the unfair discretion of whoever is handing out these ridiculous bans. Can't be care-free even when you're following the rules.

It might have been the sadism name that someone took offence to, but maybe someone took offence to something you did or said to them and used the name report as a way of getting back at you.

It opens things up for abuse by others. An alliance member was telling people in AC to go to their guild hall and /REPORT his name as being offensive simply so he could change it. He had several accounts so the temp ban wasn't going to harm him. He also said he has done this before when he wanted to change a character name so it works. The name he wanted /REPORT ed was in NO way offensive. This tells me ANET BOTS are the ones doing the Banning. An ANET employee doesn't even look at the name's being reported. ANET's Bots Do all the work.

Karma is a philosophical "what goes around comes around" of the universal. Satori is an everlasting enlightenment...any person who is remotely literate would not be offended by the name...
As for sadism, it is not always sexual in nature. Many sadists simply derive pleasure from the pain of others...what better descriptor for a necromancer? Even the skills use the term.

Anyone can get anyone else banned but no one can defend accusations that would constitute a ban.

I support name banning if the name warrants it. Such as a hateful name or one that is explicit.
None of the names listed look like they warrant a ban.
Perhaps when it's all said and done and you find out which name caused the ban, you can come back and let us all know. That way we aren't speculating when it's found out that the reason was for the character you deleted named "BJs fora dollar".
At the end of the day it's their rules, and you agreed to them.
