The most time spent on a new player.
Taisayacho
Okay, first of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, couldn't quite decide. Secondly, I searched for this but didn't find anything, sorry if I missed it.
Anyways.
Today, I had this idea after trying to explain for about 45 minutes to a new ele why eles shouldn't have minions, for the most part. (If you actually have a good ele minion build, don't flame, bladdy blah blah, but I doubt that.)
What's the most time you've spent/wasted dealing with a new player?
Another one, today I was trying to give some guy 200g for free in Ascalon City, and I had it in the box and had pressed submit, but he couldn't grasp that HE had to press submit, and just kept saying "plssssssss accept."
I kept whispering him to tell him to submit, and he finally did, after about half an hour.

You are a far more patient person than I.
But I would say the longest time I've spent explaining something was in the Underworld. Was with a PUG and the leader was arrogant and ignorant, a real pain in the ass. But we were almost done, only Ice Wastes and Unwelcome Guests left to go. The leader's "plan" ended up getting the entire party wiped during the Ice Wastes quest except for our terra tank, who obviously had no res. Now this was the terra's first time being in the Underworld. So for about the next hour I had to tell him, step by step, how to finish the Unwelcome Guests quest. Amazingly nobody left, except for the leader who dropped a few minutes before the final Keeper died.

I remember accepting to help a newbie in Shing Jea once...
I had to explain everything: ''look down there, those blue thingys are skills, and if you press some of them, it does something!''.
he didnt read his manual, didnt search the net for info, didnt go to wiki, and didnt want to do it. But he kept asking me to explain all that stuff to him...
Like I have a week of my time to waste giving basic information that can easily be found anywhere on the net with little to no effort!
I told him that if he didnt do something to fix that issue, I wouldnt help him at all. And guess what, he didnt do anything. When he understood that I just wouldnt do something so utterly absurd for him, he just left.
That guy was the most idiotic child I've ever met in an MMORPG, and I've played Runescape and WoW for quite some time before I moved to GW.
Edit: to the 2 posters below, that was my point, sorry for not being clear enough.

I used to help new players alot. At one point, I spent about 1 hour trying to help an ele from PvP go from a flare ele to the closest thing that person could get as a blindbot. But times have changed, people think their builds are the most godly in the game and Anet makes the game adapt to playerbase rather than the playerbase adapting to the game.
The current environment makes me very reluctant to PuG so I haven't helped new players for quite some time. But for those who have, more power to them.

i'd already finished all the campains and stuff (had just got my 1st year wen he started) so i thought ye ill help him... since then wenever he needs help with a mish he comes 2 me and asks and i tell him 2 get a PuG, but as mentioned above ther worthless so i do often end up guiding him thru a mish.
have bn doing that non-stop now since EotN came out. i finished it ina month, hes stuck @ oolas -.-;

i spent a few hours just last night helping out a guildie that's new to the game. i dont mind helping people out if they're nice.

Yes, of course Phaedra, but I'm looking for frustrating/funny stories :P

Would a couple weeks count? A guy would ask me at least once a day if I could give him some awesome weapons or shields. One day I just ignored what he asked, haven't heard from him since.

For me its a matter wether I like that new player or not, If I don't like that player expect me to forget and move on, If I like him I actually befriend him and teach him the ropes.
I have friends I met since they were newbies and now they are good players and we're still friends.
Friends that I don't like usually don't last more than 4 days, The ones I like I can't give an answer to that, could be a lifetime, who knows

One thing that annoys me is if I befriend the newbie and then they get good, and then get better than me and get all rich with chaos gloves, a r9 voltaic, full fow armor, and a torm shield (the usual e-peen) while I'm stuck poor >.>

Thats not a reason to have regrets, or to go back at him and say: ''You wouldnt be rich if I hadnt helped you!''
I've never had any regrets about helping a newbie, even with the story I put up earlier... I just did what I could.

not sure the longest i've spent on newbies,
I do it the odd time, whe ni see somone looking for help, aslong as they write the words in full...none of the "HALP ME PLZ!!!!!11" OR "CANANY1 GIV ME SOME HALP???????????"
I jsut stay away from them, but if they guinuinly need help i wouldn't mind at all.
on topic prob around 30min but i wouldn't call it wasted.

Seems as if the gw player base is really that low.
Come on, half an hour to get the idea to press "submit"?
Even a dumb foreigner that does not understand your language at all could do that.

I was doing some pretty intense whisper-spam to him too. I even asked him to respond to me via whisper, but he seemed to only understand me in all chat.

on the 2nd year of wintersday (sounds like the beginning of a song ) I had a person spamming in la about one of the quests---the one with the termites and such....I explained the whole quest where to get them etc....but the guy wasnt running on all cylinders and finally I just said fine I will do the quest with you...he was a warrior and I was a smiting monk so we did ok (except his build ....seeing as I didnt have a primary warrior character I couldnt tell him many better skills, but I gave him a few 'ideas').
and then while standing at storage in LA one day a guy was having problems understand armor and runes etc.....again I explained (not quite sure HOW get got to LA without any armor upgrades but---) and then I walked him over to the armor guy and the rune guy.....not sure how long I did that but it was long enough for me to not really answer many long winded questions in LA again.

I have a player that’s been on my Friends list for several months. I met his level 13 Monk at Yak’s Bend where he was having trouble with the quests. I usually avoid Monks because I’ve had several negative experiences with them. However, this particular Monk was a very tiny bald man wearing multi-colored armor. I saw him go out the portal a couple of times so I figured that he was at least trying. I volunteered to help him and, since then, we’ve teamed up to do missions, quests, or dungeons with other characters.
He dyes his armor with whatever color happens to drop so he has some pretty interesting combinations. His Elementalist is a sight to behold.
His builds are always whacked (imho) but I‘ve given up trying to give him any suggestions. He has a tendency to aggro enemies and likes to charge at bosses to see if he can take them down by himself. In spite of everything, we manage to finish whatever it is we’re working on with either some pretty amazing DP or with unexpected results.
He picked up a whole team of people to do the mission at Borlis Pass. They assumed that he was a healing or a protect monk - he was pure smite by that time. That was a disaster.
We met some Level 20 Dervishes tricked out with fancy armor and weapons at Beetletun one time. On our way to Bergen Hot Springs, they tried to tell him that Illusion of Haste was not the best skill for a Monk to have on his bar as he sailed off to meet a pack of Ettins or maybe it was Tengu.
We took my Warrior and his smiting Monk through the Dragon’s Lair mission. He wanted to go for the bonus; I figured we had nothing to lose. We killed Glint. I think his multi-colored armor must have distracted her or maybe it appealed to her somehow.
He got kicked off a team at Arborstone because the size of his Necromancer’s minions didn’t measure up to the team leader’s expectations. He was replaced with Dunkoro. No one even asked about my Ranger’s build.
The last time I talked to him was learning how to farm raptors with his Assassin. I went with him on a couple of his trial runs. It looks like he finally found something where it’s good to aggro everything, including the Boss.

Chat must've lasted 10-15 minutes. I was already in a bad mood already, and this guy begs me for help in private. Can't believe that this guy didn't wanna kill !over 100 enemies" for his sunspear title -_-.
Better read the thing. Some people are... impossible to deal with.

You were a lot more patient than I would have been. Generally that kind of plea for help results in requests - demands actually - for a lot more than help with quests. But I'm sure you know that.
Should have told him that anyone can do the Honorable General - talk to the General, move outside his agrro range, and wait for the timer to count down. Even he could have done that by himself.

The most I have ever done is answer them in town if they are asking a question. For example:
New player (in Sunspear Hall): where is Kamadan?
Me: It's the city you start in
New player: Oh, that city. Thnx
*Player promptly exits via portal, set on walking back to Kamadan
Other player: He's going to be screwed if he doesn't figure out how to map teleport.

lol, I actually (pheww, only once) took a new player and help them do a series of quests including (over the walls, killing charrs quest), and consequently lost my survivor title due to that .... point is, you can't explain to new players about build, they need to "experience" it themselves. you also cannot explain to them not to mob, they also need to die and you with them to understand.
I guess my mistake was: never use your survivor character to help a new player.
oh, PS: if you decided to help a new player, please keep in mind it will take time. sooooooo, do it and be happy you help if you don't have time, just steer clear of new players.

@ Evaine... That is an epic story, I love characters like that, they may be new, may not know exactly what's going on but can provide you with some real entertainment, and hey, you still get stuff done! I would deal with 5 of those people any day rather than 1 "leet" player who has all the flashy crap and figures they know everything with the huge attitude that blames everyone else, ragequits, when something goes wrong even if it's their fault, for 5 mins. Always nice to get a chuckle from someone when you're playin online.

Dark Flame - Picture an Ele with flame red hair and armor pieces dyed green, yellow and orange. At the time he was in a guild that had a purple cape. He’s in a different guild now and he has new armor so it’s not those colors anymore. The last time I saw his Dervish it was sporting blue, green and orange armor pieces.
He recently joined an active guild that seems to be part of a really helpful alliance so he has lots of people on his Friends list now. I've met some of them and they really seem to be nice people.
Helping new players can be a lot of fun. I actually learn a lot from them.

Most time I've spent with a newbie? Not long at all, all of ten minutes I think, yesterday in Ascalon City (Post). Gave a new girl some hide, told her where to get more, pointed her to Corwen. Then several hours later got a PM. Gavce her a price check on black dye (lucky thing) and pointed her to the wiki.
Another Necromancer joins the world ^.~
Most time I've spent with someone who's irritating. Too long. I spent most of my time Vanq'ing Cantha because he was constantly PM'ing me for free stuff and help with vanq'ing (he didn't own Factions). I shouldn't have let him know I was female, that may have been the problem

i was hanging out in ascalon one day on a newbie character, and saw this guy asking questions in local such as "what are runes used for and why cant i use the minor divine favor on my expertise mask?", and people in ascalon were just laughtingat him in local. so i whispered him and briefly explained the system.
then he asked me wtf he shoudl do next because he is stuck in ascalon and cannot go back to pre to finish his quest..
long story short i spend about 3 hours with the guy just helping him around and even ran him around ascalon to all cities.
was worth it, i made a friend this way, now he is a leader of some guild, have good set up 3 characters and enjoys the game. we sometimes team up to do dungeons or elite misions together ^.^

My friend bought the game and I helped him for 7 months by explaining things and showing him how to do things. Whenever I logged on I would instantly get messages about "whats this mean? and how do I do this, Where can I find this"
Now he is an even better player than I am, with more maxed characters, a nearly maxed HoM and hes rich. He forgot about me when he joined some guild. Figures. Even the people I know in real life are jerks. I can't even get people to ping me a template when I need one for my heroes.

I'll help but I'm picky about who I'll help.
There is a guy in my guild who is constantly asking for free stuff. Last week he was spamming alliance chat for a half hour asking someone to give him a free Destroyer Hammer. Other times he's asking for free power leveling, free runs, free weapons, free gold, etc etc. I refuse to help him. Most others in my alliance have placed him on their ignore lists.
The other day I was setting up to do Jokonar Diggings with heroes and out of the blue someone whispers me and asks "how do I get to Ascalon?". I reply with my usual "Do I know you under another name?" I assumed it was someone on my friends list or someone in my alliance. Nope, he was just a random person in Jokonar Diggings that spotted me and decided to ask for help. (I suppose my warrior has a friendly face or something)
I asked if he owned Prophecies and spent about a half-hour chatting with him and giving him tips. He said his friend from school had a new character in Ascalon City and he wanted to join up with him and play together. I finally convinced him to start a new Prophecies character rather than trying desperately to run his Level 5 Dervish to Ascalon to join him. He was friendly and his questions were intelligent and articulate so I didn't mine helping.
Another time, I was doing Minister Cho's Estate HM. I joined up with a Warrior and Elementalist. I was playing Ele also and I brought a hero monk. We quickly wiped. After the wipe I asked what skill bars the others had. The warrior had a half decent build, but the ele was horrible. He had no elite and the only skill I ever saw him use in the mission was Flare. I tried to explain that flare isn't a very good skill for HM, but he wouldn't listen. Both of them called me a noob and insisted that Flare was better than any ele elite in the game. I gave up. Some people can't be helped.
I've done Slaver's Exile a few times. My first time thru we had an Obsidian Tank warrior who admitted as soon as he joined that he had never done Duncan before and he was still new to the Ob Tank build. We decided to take a chance with him. He had a few mishaps along the way, but overall he was a good tank. He asked for advice before aggro'ing each mob and also asked us to tell him if he screwed up big time. He listened and learned a lot.
Last week I did Duncan again. This time we had a swap Necro along that had never been in Duncan's dungeon before. He brought the proper build but didn't know how to use it. An experienced ranger on the team took a few minutes to explain to the Necro how to swap out the spirits and how to take down Duncan. The Necro caught on quickly and we finished the dungeon.
Those people are very pleasant to help.

I wasted about 30 minutes helping a new recruit do that Market place quest just so he can leave guild after I helped him. It happened on more than one occasions since I'm the guild leader. After that I kinda stopped helping people and haven't really recruited. Another time a new guild recruit came with us to UW. after explaining for like 15 mins why his bar sucks we fixed his monk bar and he goes straight in to get the quest before we kill any aatxes. I kicked him after.
